T-Mobile

Hi! Does anyone here have this carrier? I found a plan online for $80/mo for 2 smart phones with unlimited talk, text and 1Gb of data per phone line. There is also a promo out that they will pay your termination fee's with your current carrier if you trade in 2 phones...is this too good to be true?Anyway, what plan do you have with T-Mobile and how do you like it? We currently have Verizon and like it but it costs a lot.

Re: T-Mobile

  • We are feeling the same way about Verizon. Thanks for posting, I'm hoping to read what others have to share as well.

  • I'm also intrigued by T Mobile's offer. H loves his phone so he's skeptical, but I'd love to learn more.
  • We just switched from Verizon to T Mobile, and it was definitely the right decision for us.  We were paying like $140 a month for Verizon, and that was with a discount through our employer.  At T Mobile, we pay about $90 a month (also with employer discount).

The thing you have to understand about T Mobile is that they do not offer contracts in exchange for phones.  That means that you have to pay for the phone, unlike Verizon where they give you a massive discount or free phone for signing a contract.  At T Mobile, you must either find/buy a phone that is compatible for their service, buy a phone from them up right, or sign on to one of their payment plans (interest free).  We decided to buy used phones (Google Nexus) through T Mobile's website.  It works out to about $10 a month per phone for two years (I think..it may be for just one year).  If we would have gone with brand new iPhones, it would have been more like $25 a month per phone, making T Mobile not much cheaper than Verizon.  We don't mind having a used phone, and we like to keep our phones forever, so this really works out for us.  I like the idea that once our phones are paid off, our bill will only be like $60 or $70 a month.  However, if you are the type of person that likes to have the latest and greatest phone, then T Mobile isn't much cheaper than Verizon.

As far as service goes, the T Mobile is not as good as Verizon in rural locations.  However, we live in a major city, so that only affects us when we are traveling.  Considering that we have work phones with Verizon service that we could use in an emergency, we decided we could take the risk of not having TMobile service while traveling.  This is really the only draw back.

Also, I've found that T Mobile has MUCH better customer service in my opinion.  We went to a store once and didn't have to wait at all before talking to a rep.  At Verizon, I always had to wait at least 30 mins.

Wow, thanks for the info! Does that $90/month include your phone cost?
  • Yes, this is the plan we have!  It's great and is the right fit for us.  You really can't beat the price.  We tend to be on wi-fi if we get on the internet so we never go over data.  DH has been on tmobile forever.  I was always on verizon.  Once we started thinking about getting iPhones I couldn't believe how expensive verizon was - $100 per smart phone so I switched in the blink of an eye to tmobile.

  • Did you guys pay full price for Iphone at Tmobile?
  • Wow, thanks for the info! Does that $90/month include your phone cost?
Yes.  Actually just double checked and it is $82.  We get a discount through our employer though.
  • ok cool! I got a employer discount with Verizon but probably won't get one with Tmobile, but it will still be a lot cheaper! We pay $123 for 1 smart phone, and 1 dumb phone. Before I downgraded, it was $145 for 2 smartphones with the employer discount.

    this sounds great!

  • Did you guys pay full price for Iphone at Tmobile?
Yes we did.  We actually bought them from an Apple Store.  If you trade in your old iPhone (mine old one was jailbroken).  I got $100 off at the Apple Store for trading in my old iPhone.  It was either pay in full for an iPhone or finance it with our plan and I didn't want to do that.

    ok cool!
  • my iPhone 5c I paid for was $500
DH uses his phone more for business so he got the 5s with the most gigs and I think it was $800

we don't plan on getting any more phones for quite some time.  I got a deal on a case from amazon. it was only $6.

  • Wow! That is a lot of money! I'm ok with NOT getting an Iphone, but H already has one and doesn't want to trade it in (even though it says online for them to pay the Verizon cancellation fees you have to trade them in)...so we'll stop in the store tomorrow together to get more details. Im not picky about my phone as we have an Ipad and that is my toy :D . I am nervous about the cost of phones if we switch over
  • It's an interesting idea-we both like to have iPhones, but I am ok with not having the latest version (H not so much).  We could definitely save to buy them new, especially with Apple store trade-ins.  The problem is that I've found iPhones don't really tend to hold up much longer than 2 years.  I've had my 4s for about a year, and it's already starting to run pretty slow, crash on certain websites, etc.  It still may be cheaper with new phones every two years, I'll just have to do the math.  There's definitely no way I'll get H to part with his 5s until something much nicer is on the market, however.
  • That's how verizon gets the money from you from the iPhone.  Their plan is high because they are financing the phone in it for you.  I'd rather have a cheap plan and pay for my own phone.  Of course you can add $25 to your tmobile bill every month until it's paid off and then the bill will go back down to $80/month.  We like iPhones because we have mac computers and iCloud….so everything syncs together….it's fabulous and so easy.

Ah, that what's my husband just explained to me, thank you!! Makes sense, and I agree with you
  • Hi Ladies,

I am staying put with AT&T but my husband recently switched from Verizon to T-Mobile and he loves it!

The only small note to add - TMobile sends a Mastercard GiftCard up to $350 for the termination costs. So if it costs $500 to terminate your contract they will not pay the full amount, only $350. When my husband switched he had to pay off his termination costs, we filled out all the paperwork and got a giftcard in the mail about 6 wks later. It was a bit long of a process - just wanted to put it out there in case anyone is thinking TMobile will write you a check on the spot :)

Otherwise  - he is very happy he switched, there wasnt a big variance with the coverage and he is also paying installments on the new Samsung S5 of about $20 per month on top of his phone bill of $70 so in total his phone bill is under $100.

Ok, thanks for clarifying! I will have to check into the costs of cancelling with Verizon

We switched a few months ago from Verizon, saving $30+ a month (and going from 1 smart and 1 dumb phone to 2 smart phones). Like PP have said, rural coverage can be an issue.....  We purchased Windows phone by Nokia for less than $100 each.

ETA:  Streaming music, such as Pandora, is free and doesn't count against your data usage.   ;-)
  • We switched from Sprint to T-mobile last week.  When our contract is up in April, we'll be switching back.  I don't feel their coverage is as good whatsoever.  And we travel enough and drive through the country enough, that it's not worth not having service for us.  I'm not sure who we will switch to though...either AT&T or Verizon.

  • My ILs just switched to T-mobile.  They tried to get MW and I to switch.  Where I work the coverage just sucks.  I would basically have to go outside to get cell phone coverage from work.  They will be using it mainly in the city where coverage is better.
  • I use T-Mobile and I love it.  $50/month no contract, free music streaming, and when you travel abroad I believe you can use the texting/data for free...don't remember about talk.

I am one of those people who would rather pay for the phone than for the service, so it made sense to me.  I went from paying $50 a month at Verizon for a dumb phone to paying the same monthly amount at T-Mobile plus the cost of the phone.  I bought a fairly cheap Nokia Windows phone that I love.  It all worked out for me because our monthly phone payment comes out of our joint account, but I used my personal fun money to pay for the phone.

Service can be spotty in rural areas.  However, if you are at a location with WiFi, T-Mobile has free wifi calling you can use.
