AW: Our paint project

Some evidence of what a little paint can do!  Pictures are in this order:

Before: Second bedroom
After: Second bedroom (with nasty carpet taken out!!  We found hardwoods under half of it...)
Before: Master bedroom
After: Master bedroom (also with nasty carpet taken out!)
Before: Small office/third bedroom
After: Small office/third bedroom
Before: Living room
After: Living room
Currently: Our laundry closet door... we are replacing it so we didn't bother to paint it.  But that's the old paint color (same as the living room!) next to the new paint color.  I think it was 100% worth it!

H and I both lean toward "cool" colors.  All of these colors (both the befores and afters) read a bit darker in real life than they do in the photos below.  The second bedroom is porcelain blue, the master is light green, the little office is an off-white, and the living room is actually a taupe (though the photos look yellow here for some reason).

This house doesn't have a ton of natural light, so we really needed to go for lighter colors.  Previously, every room felt a bit like a cave because the paint colors throughout were just too dark.  If we had better light we would have probably picked some bolder colors.  But we are happy with how this turned out, and we'll add some bold colors in our fabrics, etc. when it comes time to decorate.

Re: AW: Our paint project

  • Great color choices! And we love our original hardwoods.

  • EDIT: I forgot to add... the cooler colors actually really improved the color of the hardwoods for us.  With all the warm and very dark colors that the previous owners picked the red undertones of the hardwoods really came out, and it just felt too warm for us.  Once we painted the lighter, cooler colors the cooler undertones in the hardwoods came out, and now we REALLY love them.  They still add plenty of warmth to the rooms, but it's not overwhelming.  I think that difference is most obvious in the photos of the pink bedroom.

So that was an unexpected but very happy surprise!  We liked the hardwoods before, but we didn't love them because we didn't love the color.  Now we love the color!

  • Wow! What a mistake that pink was. I'm sure it was a little girls room, but there are ways to make a kids room without painting it an obnoxious color. Looks amazing!

  • great job! H and I have gone for some bolder colors (our living room is a deeper purple color...offset by light hardwoods, light colored furniture, area rug, and curtains) we definitely plan to repaint some of the more bold rooms before we put our house on the market...that pink is aweful!

  • Thanks!  The pink was really horrible - it kind of made you squint to look at it IRL.

We got a ton done thanks to my parents.  My dad is pretty handy and he made sure everybody knew what they were tasked to do, and as one thing got completed he lined up the next thing so there was virtually no down time.  We are all still pretty tired, but it was worth it!

All we have left are the door frames (I finished the windows), and the crown molding in the living room before we move in. H and I are doing the door frames in the bedrooms tonight so flooring guys can hopefully come in as soon as we are back from London.  We are leaving Thursday night, so we don't have much time left to get those rooms 100% done!  Then H has a full week left after we are back from London before he starts his job.  We are moving over Labor Day weekend, so I think we'll have it all done before furniture goes in.  Having an empty house is a rare opportunity to get projects done!

The back half of the house is still the old colors... but we are probably going to move a couple walls back there next summer, and we figured there was no point in painting it just to tear it up in 10 months.

  • They look so good!  Love how the lighter and brighter colors really made the hardwoods pop.

fun-fact; phyciatric institutions often have a room that is painted a bright pink color, they'll put someone having a manic episode into the room, because it pretty much forces them to close their eyes and calm down.

  • Love the colors you chose! Definitely a huge improvement over the bold color choices the previous owners used.

FI and I are in the process of slowly repainting our house as well. We don't get lot of natural light either and our previous owners used a lot of dark colors. And neon green in our staircase for some reason (it's about as awful as it sounds). The rooms we've done so far, we've chosen nice, light, cool colors in order to make the rooms brighter and more open-feeling. We're going to use bolder colors in our accent pieces as well.

  • Wow! What a mistake that pink was. I'm sure it was a little girls room, but there are ways to make a kids room without painting it an obnoxious color. Looks amazing!

When I was 8 I convinced my parents to let me paint my room almost that exact teal color. I feel pretty bad about it in retrospect.

Actually, I didn't really mind the teal... but my husband and parents thought I was nuts so we went with that light blue instead :)  At the end of the day, it was the right choice.  It will be our guest room, and we have some nice white bedding with blue and white accent pillows.  I'm hoping it comes out looking very fresh.

When I was little I had a (light) pink room, then a yellow room, and finally a green room.  The green I've loved for a long time, and it's the reason I wanted green in this house.  I would normally prefer a green that's a bit darker, but this room just couldn't handle it (we tested some samples).

I definitely think there's a balance between letting kids decorate to their heart's content and having it be something that future buyers can tolerate - especially when it's on the market!

  • What an improvement!  Great job!
  • I kinda liked the teal as well. lol.  One of our rooms is my music room where I teach lessons.  I have an accent wall painted with metallic turquoise paint.
