I'm reading Fly Away Home the sequel to Firefly Lane. I loved Firefly Lane but it had been a while since I read it. I didn't think Fly away home would pick up right after the ending so it's more depressing than I anticipated. I never really liked Tully so wasn't sure Id want a book of her but it's been good so far.

The last thing I read was a Dog's journey: also a sequel. I liked the first much better. This one was just too sad at times! It took me a long time to read it.

Best book : a dog's purpose (first book to the one above) loved it!

Next: not sure! I have an obscene amount of ebooks that I haven't read yet. I've been in a reading slump. I did put a few ebooks on hold too. I was thinking of trying to finish Outlander. I know the series is loved and now they are starting the show. I tried reading it 4 years ago and stopped. I just was looking through a synopsis last night thinking I may try starting off where I left off. I wanted to like it but it wasn't doing much for me. But sometimes I have better luck with books at different times.

I think Firefly Lane was the last book I read that wasn't a children's book or a text book. :-( I really liked it so maybe I'll have to pick up the sequel.

I feel the same way.  A Dog's Purpose is such a moving book.  I had to hug my dog ever time I put the book down.

I just loved that book so much! It really had every emotion!! So heartwarming and heartbreaking. One of my all time favorite books. And I would hug my dog through it too!

Did you read the next one? I really wanted to love it but there wasn't as many happy parts as the first one so I found it so hard to read. I had to stop reading it for months!

The second one was just ok.  I really wasn't as attached to the characters as I was with the first one.  I agree, I didn't read it nearly as fast.

What are you currently reading? Recommend it?

    • John Green's "An Abundance of Katherines"  I like it so far, I wanted something quick and easy to complete, but that I would know would be a good book.
    • Sarah Vowel's "Unfamiliar Fishes" I love Sarah Vowel, she is so funny and this doesn't disappoint, it is about the history of Hawaii.
    • A book on organizational theory in higher education, a book on the history of higher education (about my 5th time through this book), a book on college students in the US, and some articles on the role of the institutional review board in faculty research. Why you ask? I am updating my syllabi for the upcoming semester and re-working a research paper to submit.  And yes I would actually recommend all of these books, but if your passion is not higher education or student affairs you probably don't want to read them.  If it is we should talk!
    • Anthony Bordain's "Kitchen Confidential" for fun only it not well written, but the stories are interesting.

What is the last thing you read?

"Gone Girl"  I didn't actually finish it though. I read about 2-3 chapters and then talked to a friend who recommended it. I said, "Let me guess--this is what happens." Well I was right--it kind of ruins a mystery when you figure it out, so I turned it back in.

Best book you've read this year?

Nothing I am really fired up about, I read lots of fun stuff but I wouldn't say any of it was really great.

What are you planning on reading next?

Donna Tartt's "Goldfinch"  her book "The Secret History" is one of my all time favorite books.  If you have never read The Secret History, I HIGHLY recommend it.  I use to assign it in a class and I have students email me out of the blue  all the time thanking me for having them read it.  The first 200 pages is a little hard to get through but then it really takes off and it is hard to but down.  It is long like 600-800 pages.

So glad someone else has had the "Outlander" problem, everyone I know loves it and I have been trying to trudge though it for 8 years! I am not a freak!
  • What are you currently reading? The Actress by Amy Sohn
Recommend it? So far so good. It's about an actress who basically gets conned into marrying a famous movie star who has been plagued by rumors that he's gay despite his playboy reputation. In short, it's my theory about George Clooney in book form. ;)

What is the last thing you read? A biography of Kate Middleton. I love her and it was a very quick read for me.

Best book you've read this year? I don't know that I have one. I've been having a pretty bad book slump lately. I guess The Collector by Nora Roberts. It wasn't spectacular, but it was good and more than I can say about a lot of what I've read this year.

What are you planning on reading next? Not sure. I have a long list of books to read and need to start getting some on hold at the library. I am anxiously awaiting the newest Susan Elizabeth Phillips due out at the end of the month.

  • What are you currently reading? Recommend it?: I just finished it on the bus this morning, but it was Elin Hilderbrandt's The Island.  I usually LOVE her books, but for some reason I just couldn't get into this one :(  none of the characters clicked for me.

What is the last thing you read? I Didn't Come Here to Make Friends by Courtney Robertson (where are my bachelor girls???)  Loved it, if you're a fan of the franchise, I would recommend it....it was an easy and entertaining read.

Best book you've read this year? hmmm....I liked and the mountains echoed and the husband's secret.  Oh and "me before you" by JoJo Moyes was fantastic.

What are you planning on reading next?  The Vacationers by  Emma Straub
    The Blog - Parenting: Uncensored

    Liam - 5.17.11
  • Emmy, good call on the recommended books. I liked those a lot too. Me before you, the husband's secret, and the mountains echoed in that order of preference.

  • What are you currently reading? Recommend it?: I'm currently reading A Clash of Kings. I've been reading it for the past month. I just can't fly through these books the way I can super fluffy stuff.

What is the last thing you read? A Game of Thrones. I was in the middle of The Goldfinch and Cuckoo's Calling when I had to return the e-books, so I'm back on the wait list to finish them. I was really enjoying Goldfinch. I also want to read And the Mountains Echoed.

Best book you've read this year? I've only read a few books, so I don't have a "best" yet.

What are you planning on reading next? Fodors Alaska and Vancouver books, as well as A Storm of Swords.

  • What are you currently reading? Recommend it?
I am finally getting to The Night Circus after having it on my nook for at least two years.  Since I own it, I always seemed to put it aside for library books.  It's great so far.

What is the last thing you read?
If I Stay by Gayle Forman.  Doubt I will see the movie but it's not a bad, quick read.

Best book you've read this year?
Me Before You and One Plus One, both by Jo Jo Moyes, Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese, and Tell The Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt.

What are you planning on reading next?
Orphan Train (I'm #1 on the library waiting list!)  I also have holds on Where She Went (follow up with If I Stay), The Rosie Project, and Big Little Lies (by the author of The Husband's Secret). I may also check out the Flavia Luce series though I admit I am not big on mysteries.

The Secret History is one of my alltime favorites too. I read it in college and fell in love with it. I didn't like The Little Friend the way I loved The Secret History, but so far the Goldfinch has me pulled in. I have high hopes for it.

  • We haven't done this in a while! We are going on vacation in a couple weeks so thinking of what I should read.
What are you currently reading? Recommend it?
NOS4A2. I'm really enjoying it, although I'm only 100 pages in. It's in the sci/fi horror genre.

What is the last thing you read?
    Gone Girl

Best book you've read this year?
I really enjoyed Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. It's been on my "to read" list for years and I'm so glad I finally got a chance to read it.

What are you planning on reading next?
I'm not sure, I have a few things on my list for the library ebooks. I really want to read The Goldfinch, but it's on wait list and probably will be for a very long time.

  • I spend too much time watching TV and on the computer and not enough time reading.  That means I only get to books when on vacation.

I've been working on To Kill a Mockingbird for a few months.  I like it a lot so far and should be able to finish it when I go on another vacation next month.

The last book I read was Catcher in the Rye.  It was OK but not as good as a I thought it would be.

When DH and I got married I discovered he had some classics that I never got around to reading so now I am working my way through them.

  • What are you currently reading? Recommend it?   Dark Visions by Jonas Saul (It's a series about a girl who is clairvoyant and solves murders).  I am only one chapter in, so I don't know if it's good yet.

What is the last thing you read?  Darkplaces by Gillian Flynn

Best book you've read this year?  Definitely Me Before You.  I loved it so, so much.  Darkplaces was also a good one.   I also liked The Comfort of Lies by Randy Susan Meyers.

What are you planning on reading next?  If I like the Jonas Saul, then I also have books 2-4 on my kindle as well.  (Thank goodness for Book Bub and their free book listings!)
