How do you do your hair?

I purchased my first straightener when I was about 18 and have been addicted to it ever since.  I wash my hair every other night, let it mostly air dry, then run the blow dryer over it just to tame any wild chunks before I go to bed.  In the morning, I drag the straightener all over it.  I've done this forever now, regardless of the length or cut of my hair.

This morning, I couldn't get my straightener to warm up (RIP friend, it's been a good ride!) and I started to just throw it up in a ponytail but instead decided to just wear it as is and see if it poofed out too much during the day to do this all the time.  it would be nice to not rely on the straightener, but I'm also wondering if maybe taking a curling iron or something to a few pieces would help.  My hair tends to naturally flip out on the ends like Carol Brady and I'm thinking maybe curling a few under pieces would help with that?

Re: How do you do your hair?

  • I'm ZERO help.  I put my hair into a low pony with a side part while it's still wet.

  • No help  here as my hair has natural curl.... so I wash in the morning and then put a curl in my bangs area....... Ha. My hair is the longest it has been in years and I soooo want to chop it. I know it is easy to just pull back but drives me nuts!! :)
  • I wash mine every day, in the morning.  (Otherwise, I can't make it do anything and it takes me LONGER to get ready).  I blow it dry and use a fat curling iron.  Which doesn't give it curl, just kind of gives it volume, makes it lay better, etc.
  • My hair is super fine, thin, and really flat, so I can't let it air dry.  After I wash my hair, I blow dry it a little bit all over, and then I blow dry it by sections using round brushes.  If we are going out somewhere, I might throw in a few hot curlers for some extra oomph.  Then I use a little bit of dry shampoo for volume, and a little hairspray to control my fly aways.  It still looks pretty flat after I do all of that, but the alternative is looking like a drowned rat!  lol
  • I have been sporting a pony tail for most of the summer because of summer poofiness.  But, when have an actual style, there is a flat iron involved.

  • I can style my hair without washing it first, but it is unpredictable. So I shower in the morning. Sometimes I get in an every other day routine for shampooing, but mostly I wash my hair every day.

When my hair is chin length, I use a hair dryer and a big round brush to curl the ends under. And if I'm feeling up to it, I use mousse at my scalp to give my hair the appearance of more body. Occasionally, I "crunch" my hair in my hands while it is still wet to make it look wavy and pull up the hair around my face into clips.

When I'm overdo for a haircut and blow drying doesn't work, I use a large barrel curling iron to curl the ends under and try to add some life to the hair around my face.

My hair is fine and super straight, so I've never considered using a straightener. ;-)

  • I have to wash my hair every day or it looks really greasy.  That may also have to do with my roots showing through but whatever.  Anyway, so my hair is chin length and straight but I have a lot of hair.  I blow it dry and then run a big curling brush that also dries the hair (think hot air blowing through round brush) and sometimes will curl the ends with an iron.  But that's about it - doesn't take long.  I switch it up on "special occasions" and flip it back with curling iron but that only looks good if my hair has some layers.

On a different note, I have had my curling brush for at least 15 years - amazing it has lasted this long!

  • Thanks ladies!  I was just wondering if I was missing out on some type of magical styling tool or product since I've been attached to my straightener for so long.  I'm trying to grow my hair out, so that's certainly not helping anything right now....it's at that awkward in between stage where it's hitting just below my shoulders and my layers are kind of all over the place, but I need to let them get a bit longer before I can try to get it all evened out.  I am on a mission to not chop it off though!!  we'll see how long I last.

Sounds like you except I wash and dry most mornings. I have been using a straightener for so many years!! Before that I would use a big barrel curling iron to tame the craziness but I like the straightener better.

My hair isn't curly just doesn't behave. If I let it air dry my layers all flip out. When I blow dry one side is ok and the other flips out like crazy. I canon master the round brush!

My hair is about chin length so I can't do much else with it. I do put my side bangs up with bobby pins most days.

The newest thing I've tried is curling my hair. I have had some good results curling with my straightener. The curls stay in pretty well and I can do a decent job even though my hair is short. I tried handband curls (all over Pinterest!) but my hair is too short. I tried them on dd and they were awesome!! I definitely suggest giving them a try for anybody without really short hair. Dd's hair is very fine and the curls stayed in all day and even some after she slept on them.

  • If I straighten, it's a multi step process of blowing dry and then smoothing with a flat iron. I will say, though, when I whined about it to my old stylist she suggested mostly drying with a blow dryer then putting large velcro rollers in, going about morning routine, then quickly running the blow dryer over it to 'set'. It's supposed to smooth but give volume :)

I love my hot air brush.

My hair is naturally curly so I mostly air dry or dry with a diffuser but if I want to wear it straight-ish (smooth but with some wave or curl), a hot air brush is my go-to.

  • I just looked up some hot air brush tutorials.  I am intrigued.

  • I have one also and when I want to make my curly hair "straigher" I use that.
  • I have super dry hair, so I wash it every 3rd day, at night. I can't use a hairdryer at all because apart from it taking forever it makes my hair look like a bundle of straw, no matter how much or what kind of product I use. Anyway, then I either french braid it before bed or straighten or curl it (both with a straightener) the next morning. Day 1 I wear it down, day 2 half up, and day 3 totally up. I always put it up loosely at night, and before bed on day 2 I put some dry shampoo in it. I'm in the process of growing it out and growing out my bangs as well, so I've been trying a lot of pinterest hairdos.

I have the in-styler which I think is the same as a hot air brush mentioned above.  I love it.  I have naturally curly super thick hair and it just helps smooth it out and sort of "straight".  I only wash my hair probably twice a week because it is so thick and tends to dry out.  I just got it all cut off (donated to Pantene beautiful lengths) so my current routine is just put some curl control crème in it when wet, let it air dry, and hope for the best.  I do use a flat iron on my bangs if I want to wear them straight down.

ETA:  I just looked up the hot air brush and they are different than the in-styler.  I think my hair would just puff out with the hot air brush.
