Making Extra $$$

I pride myself on being great at budgeting and saving money. By no means are my hubby and I in debt, so this is more of a precaution; a just-in-case. I have been sick lately and have missed a lot of work, thus using up pretty much all of my vacation time. Does anyone have any tips on making extra cash? Preferably something I can do at home, since my Doctor suggests that I stay home for a little while longer.

Re: Making Extra $$$

  • Sell stuff on Amazon/Ebay that you no longer need, it's pretty easy. I also bring old clothes to the consignment shop and that can add up as well. I hear about people who sell things on Etsy, but I've never done it.
  • Have you talked to your boss about the possibility of working from home?

Hi everyone! Thanks for the input. I will be looking into all the suggestions. Unfortunately, I'm not able to do my work from home.

  • There's a website called Fiverrr where you can list tasks (i.e. Proofread three pages or review a website) that you'll do for 5 dollars, plus add ons. Apparently the website's cut is a dollar. Can this be worth the time? I don't know. It does seem, however, that lots of people are using it, some even full-time. I'd recommend checking it out, I don't think I described it very well.
  • selling things on CL is pretty much all the extra time I have for making extra $$.  Do you have a hobby that could create more cash flow for you?  There are websites out there where you take surveys for extra $$, but I've never had the time to try it.

  • I started selling extra stuff on my local FB Yard Sale Group about a year ago. At first I looked around and though WHAT am I going to be able to get rid of and it may have been 2-3 things, but then once I started getting more room(and more organized) and cash started rolling in, it's been nuts. Basically if I come across something I haven't used in a while or forgot I had, it goes up on the site. I usually always meet at the same spot and try to get more than one meeting at a time. It's not the most convenient thing to do, but does get rid of crap you really don't need/want anymore, and produces money. I've made hundreds doing it.

I know not everyone is a fan of direct sales, but I've done it with two different companies now. The first was REALLY pushy and you had to buy the products up front, recoup your costs and do most of the order filling and shipping. I quit that as it was not worth the time or money. The one I'm with now is much more user friendly, you basically facilitate orders, they fill and ship them, and then send you a direct deposit for 25% of whatever you sell. You also have a lot of ways to get free product and I just sell those too unless it's something I'm DYING for. I think Direct Sales is what you make of it and as long as you don't "drink the kool-aid" can be beneficial, especially if you are stuck at home. All of my stuff happens on Facebook, I have yet to do an at-home party.

Thanks, everyone! I will definitely be looking into Fiverr... it sounds interesting! I've been doing surveys online for the past few years and while it doesn't bring in a ton of money, it's still a decent amount.

  • This may be extreme, but my husband and I are looking into hosting an international college student in our guest bedroom.  It will pay about $800 to $900 a month. If you have an extra bedroom and live near a college, it might be worth looking into!

Also, I second selling stuff on Facebook yard sale sites.  I just recently posted a bunch of stuff, and it is funny... all of the stuff that I thought "No one would EVER want this" was the exact stuff that people started battling over.

This is an amazing idea!  I lived in a family's basement the last 6 months of college.  Had my own bedroom and bathroom, and it was half what an apartment would've cost me.  They allowed me to do a month to month lease, which worked perfect for my situation and I had free reign to their kitchen and laundry room.  They loved it because it helped them bring in some extra money.  We are still in touch to this day and I drive up to visit them and their kids once a year.

Thanks!  We are pretty excited about it.  It is all through a homestay company that screens the students and places the students with the best matched home.  We like it, because we KNOW we will get paid and not have to chase down the student for rent (the student pays the company then the company pays us).  Also, the company provides extra insurance and guidance for various situations that might pop up.  Plus they will find the student another home, if it doesn't work out.

The pay is a little more than you would get from just renting out the room on Craigslist, because you are supposed to welcome the student in to your home as a guest.  You cook for them, help them navigate public transportation.. some families even drive their students around and do their laundry.   In addition to the extra money, I think it will be a fun experience!
  • Hey have you ever considered direct sales.  I recently started selling Rodan & Fields, if you aren't familiar it's clinical skincare products.  They have a great compensation plan that I would love to discuss with you if you would like.  It's also a lot of fun because I go to women's homes and discuss skincare over wine and snacks.  So I'm also getting to meet a lot of people and I use the products and it gives us a little extra each month so we can do fun things.  Please let me know if you would love to learn more:  mhopp77@gmail.com
