NBR: Windows 8

Anyone use Windows 8 on a laptop? I'm needing a new one. I thought all Windows 8 computers were touch screen but apparently you pay extra for the touch screen? Anyway, thoughts?? Bueller???

Windows 8 has nothing to do with whether it's a touch screen or not...you just need to compare and decide which one you want! Windows 8 without a touch screen is awesome and works just fine!

I wouldn't buy it, Microsoft is basically shelving Win 8, also if you do get a touch screen be aware that there are 2 versions of windows, a full version of Windows and Windows RT, you can't run many programs on the RT version. Again that comes down to what you're using it for, I work for a software company and we see too many issues with Windows 8.

@jenndawnp I don't really want it but it's more $$$ to buy one with Windows 7

I really don't think for basic home computing you're going to have any issues with Window 8 (well 8.1 now), other than just learning the new UI, which is a big part of what makes it so unpopular.

So you definitely want a laptop/notebook, and not a tablet?

@84Lauren Yes a laptop. I have an iPad. I need to replace my laptop, mainly for picture editing.

I have a touchscreen Lenovo with Win 8 and love it.

I do not recommend win 8 without a touch screen. I think the reason people don't like it don't have a touchscreen which is what it was designed for.

And my DH loves my Lenovo so much he got one too just the bigger size and won't shut up about how much he loves it.

Ha! @aggiebug that's so funny, my husband got a Windows 8 tablet (I forget what kind) with a touchscreen and hated it... he barely uses it without the attachable mouse/keyboard.

I have a HP Pavilion x360 laptop that converts to a tablet, and I love it. It has the touch screen obviously, being tablet-y, and I think it's great. I am always trying to touch screens on my work laptop and the front office computer and giggle when I realize "hey, that won't work dumbass." My only problem is occasionally forgetting and trying to brush dust or cat hair off the screen and accidentally closing the program. No problems with Windows 8.1, just a bit of a learning curve.

My work laptop has Windows 8 and it is fine. There is a bit of a learning curve, although not much, but it does everything I need it to. If it were my personal laptop I'm sure I would get a lot more use out of the app view, but the desktop view with everything I need pinned to the task bar is great for work purposes.

My laptop isn't a touch screen, but my work desktop with Windows 7 is and I never realized how many people touch my screen when they are pointing something out before. It's really obnoxious because someone always ends up closing out of something or opening something because they keep touching my screen.

We definitely didn't get a tablet and I think that makes a huge difference. We have 2 laptops with a touchscreen. So it's much more functional than a tablet and the keyboard/ touchscreen interface is great. I solely use the keyboard to type but to move around the page and go between documents the touchscreen is awesome.

I have it on a touchscreen desktop and like it. I use the mouse sometimes which also works fine. I don't think I would like to use the program on a laptop with that little finger pad mouse though. I despise those things I think it would be a pain. I'd much rather have a touch screen or regular mouse.

Really??? I thought they had so many problems with 7 (or whatever was out right before 8) that they "shelved" it & released 8.

(We have a MacBookPro at home)
