Mommy's little muggle born is home :)

Well ladies, this has been a long summer...having my little one early and then spending the last 8 weeks running back and forth from the hospital. I'm happy to report that she is home - earlier than expected as they told us at the hospital to not expect her to be home until her due date of September 7th. I think Violet wanted out of the hospital though and did everything she could to grow big and strong to come home early :)

So happy she's home, but I will admit that it's a big adjustment because we're so used to her being hooked up to monitors that even the first night we couldn't sleep because we were so afraid something was going to happen to her. She's fine though and it's slowly getting easier :)

Re: Mommy's little muggle born is home :)

  • Great news! I'm glad she's home with you finally.

  • That's great news! It's so hard when the monitors are gone. I think one of us was up at all hours the first few nights because we were so worried. But she's a strong one! You'll worry a little less as time goes on. :) how big is she now?

She weighed 5 pounds 3 ounces when she came home so hopefully she's gained a bit between then and now. We are taking her to the pediatrician again this week so we'll know then how much more she weighs. One of the things I'm a little concerned about - she sleeps - a lot. When she's not eating, she's mostly sleeping. And she'll go like 3 hours in between feedings sometimes because she's asleep. I thought babies ate more often than this? At the same time, I don't want to wake her up either if she's supposed to be getting this much rest.

Normal. She's still technically supposed to be in the womb. Enjoy that fact that you don't have to entertain a fussy baby yet. I know it's not very exciting now but just wait. You'll be missing the days when she slept, ate, pooped, repeated. In the NICU for feeder/growers we'll often have 3 or 4 babies at a time. It wouldn't be possible if they didn't sleep so much!

We feed babies every 3 hours in the hospital. Babies who are breast fed often get hungry more often than this, but since your daughter was so premature I'm assuming she's either getting a high calorie formula or fortified breast milk to help her gain weight. That often keeps them fuller for longer. Follow your discharge instructions as far as feedings go and let her eat, sleep, and grow.
  • Aww yay!

  • Yea, that's the thing - she was getting fortified breast milk when she was in the hospital until about a week before they discharged her. Then it was just breast milk and has continued like that so far.

We've been trying to stick with the discharge instructions which say she should eat every 3-4 hours but then a home care nurse came here as part of her discharge and said we should feed her 'on demand'. I have no problem doing that but what's happening is either she is sleeping for hours, if we try to wake her up to feed her because she's been sleeping too long and needs to eat, she either will give protest and refuse, meanwhile when we say okay and put her back down, she will be eating her hand, so we know she's hungry. Or, she goes back to sleep but will wake up 20 minutes later crying and eating her hand because she's starving (like we knew she was) then gobbles down the milk which then aggravates her acid reflux. I'm going to call the pediatrician today and see what we can do because I realize she needs her sleep but I don't want her to starve or suffer because she's hungry either.
  • Yay for being home! There are always so many questions adjusting to having a new babe home, and I imagine that is just amplified given your little premie's special needs.  Sounds like you are doing a great job listening to her cues mama, keep it up. :)

Feeding these not quite ripe babies can be super frustrating. I hope your pediatrician has some good advice for you and can put your mind at ease. Some of the things we do in the hospital to get them to wake up and eat (we're on a time crunch) is to unwrap them so they're not too snuggly and tempted to just sleep, stroke their cheeks, talk to them, change their diapers prior to feeding.

    Good luck.

Eta: you're absolutely right not to want her gobbling down her feed and aggravating her reflux. She needs all the calories she can get, especially if you're not fortifying the milk anymore. Sounds like you're on the right path.

Omg I've been doing all of that - I change her every single time before we start the feeding. She'll wake up, then fall right back asleep. We try tickling her feet, touching her cheeks, moving her arms and legs, etc....half the time it doesn't work - she's just a sleepy baby. People probably think I'm crazy for complaining about how much she sleeps but I don't want to have a starving baby here lol
  • Not crazy! My twins were under five pounds when they came home...I'd get quite upset if they didn't eat as much as they "should." I'm sorry it's so frustrating.

  • So glad your itty bitty babe is finally home! What wonderful news!

I'm sure it's hard, when you want to make sure you're doing everything "right" to help her continue to grow and she doesn't seem to cooperate. Just keep trying; you're all learning!
