Where do you buy makeup?

I'm returning to work after 2 years home with my kids and I need to start from scratch with makeup.  Where do you go?   I don't want to just run to CVS because I need some help picking out new colors, so I'm more interested in a specialty store or specific counter at a dept. store.  I'd rather not spend a small fortune, but I know I'll have to spend to build my supplies back up.  TIA.

I use mostly Clinique (buying only when they're having a gift with sale, which online is pretty much always). But I also shop Ulta a lot. LOVE that store, plus if you don't already get their coupons in the mail, if you sign up for their loyalty program, (which offers decent benefits, btw) they'll send monthly $3.50/$5.00 off a $10.00 purchase or a straight 20% off coupon. If you haven't been they offer the range of products, everything from higher end make-up, perfume and hair products, to drugstore brands. I'm also a big fan of their store brand make-up.

  • Seconding ulta. Their line is good and what I usually buy, but they have a wide variety if brands. They also have help and give makeovers if you want help picking out colors they will do that!

I would try Ulta as well. You can even try Sephora to get tips on what different types of makeup you need/ should use, but then go buy it somewhere cheaper. They usually carry the common brands so go to cvs and use a coupon or buy when it's on sale
  • I'm picky about my foundation.  Currently I use Clinique Super Balanced liquid foundation.  I like the light coverage.  I get my eye make up from Ulta - they have a line called too-faced.  1 box of eyeshadow includes 6 or so shades of the same family.  I go cheap on mascara and eyeliner and get those at Target.  Powder is Cover Girl.  I do get bronzer from either clinique or lancome. I also get eye primer from ultra - also too faced.  I go cheap on lip gloss.  I hardly put anything on my lips anymore.

  • forgot - concealer is also cover girl.  Eyemake up and facial cleanser is Neutrogena.  I don't like spending tons of money on that stuff.  I use Neutrogena daily moisturizer as well.  I'm gonna splurge this year and get a clarisonic for exfoliating.

  • I wear a lot of makeup. I have for years...probably too much. I get all of mine from Nordstrom or Sephora.  It is by no means MM, but I don't care for the stuff that's sold in the drug stores.  Lancome mascara, Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer; Dior eye shadow; Estee Lauder and Nars blush and bronzers; Estee Lauder eye liner; Clinique and MAC lipstick and YSL concealer.  My makeup brushes come from Sephora.

I do use Neutrogena face cleaners to take off my make up and Purity to wash my face. I do have good genes and clear, normal to oily skin. I also get regular facials. (Also not at all MM) but it's something that is important to me.

I prefer Sephora to Ulta, their employee's are  knowledgeable, friendlier and more accessible if you have questions. Better customer service all over; also you can return anything if you're not satisfied. Same goes for Nordstrom.
  • Sephora or Ulta.  I wear bare minerals and love it.  I go cheap on mascara, and eye shadow.  I get it wherever its on sale.
  • I go through Mary Kay, but I had a friend who sold it and she helped me pick out my colors. I personally go through her to buy everything I need and she either delivers it to me, meet up to pick it up, or ships it through her direct site.

  • Mary Kay.  I am horrible with makeup, and she will give me something new once a year, which I like because I can liven things up a bit.
My foundation and mineral powder has been in my drawer for 2 years now, and it hasn't gotten clumpy or runny.  That's worth it to me, because I don't wear makeup often.

my H loves the after shave and the shaving cream...I'm trying really hard to get him to use the face bar and moisturizer...for nothing else but the sunscreen in it.

the skin care stuff has been pretty much the only thing i've tried that keeps my acne almost under control

  • Right now I use L'Oréal foundation and BB cream. I don't like having a ton of products. I guess I'm a cheapy and at this time in my life I'm very okay with not going to a make up counter.

  • I get everything from sephora- they have free shipping deals, samples, and you get some $ back if you go through ebates. I don't buy a ton of stuff, so it isn't too expensive- just the essentials.

  • I use and sell Mary Kay too! Just had my 9 year anniversary with the company.

I like it for all cosmetics except lipsticks - I prefer Lancôme. All my skin care is MK too. The mineral powder eye and check colors are sold so that you can easily replace them without having half-empty make-up compacts in your drawer. They also offer a wide range of great concealer, facial highlighting pens and foundations (cream to powder, mineral powder, sheer coverage with SPF, and also 3 lines of liquid foundations).

  • Mary Kay here too. My liquid eyeliner is Loreal though, I like the applicator better.
