Talk to me about yoga...

I'm thinking about taking a yoga class, but I'm fat and not super flexible, so I can just imagine being completely miserable and embarrassed the whole time.

What should I expect from a class?

  • I've only taken a few classes, but each time the instructor has been great at stressing that you can modify poses to make them easier/less stressful on your knees/whatever you need. I, too, am fat and inflexible, and I've enjoyed it. I get a little stuck on the 'breathing right' bit, which I find difficult and is my hangup with yoga. But give it a go! They're friendly and want you to relax and feel good (:

  • My instructor will usually start out in a pose and then give you steps to make it more difficult if you are able. He also stresses taking a break and going into child pose (Google if necessary) if you are feeling overworked.

My class has people of all ages/sizes/fitness levels. I love yoga. It is a great stress reliever and an excellent full-body workout.

    Good luck!

  • I have love the few yoga classes I've taken. Overall, it's one of the most accepting, beginner-friendly exercise environments that I know of.

I have found that they often give a few modifications for each pose: an easier one, the "middle ground," and a harder one for those looking to push themselves a bit more. My instructors have also always stressed that any time you need to take a break you can rest in child's pose or stop for a drink of water, and to try to concentrate on your own body rather than comparing to what others can do.

I say give it a shot! And I bet if you ask this question around at a few different studios, their answers will help you decide where you'll feel most welcome. :)

  • I'm weird. I hate regular yoga, but love hot yoga. It helps me focus and bend better. And I am fat, out of shape, and not bendy at all.

Overall though, I think you'll do fine if you focus on the technique and try not to be so hard on yourself!

  • I love it. I highly suggest paying for a private lesson before jumping into a class. My instructor is awesome. She usually asks how everyone is feeling and what people need, and that dictates the class. She does a lot with modification for beginners. I felt confident going into my first class after having a private lesson.
