Outlander Episode 3 (spoilers)

The resurrection of the old post below reminded me we haven't talked about it yet.  What did everyone think?

I think the characters are really starting to develop.  I love Dougal's man who follows Claire around.  Did anyone catch who that is? Is that Rupert?  I don't mind the small changes so far. They irk me a bit, but overall, I think it hasn't taken away from the story. And the sense of humor that DG has with her characters is finally starting to come through a bit.  Even though I knew what they were saying, it took me the first two episodes to relax when listening to the accents and catch the humor.

I also really like how slow they seem to be taking it.  In the first episode I was fearful they were rushing things too much.  I didn't expect her to be at Leoch so fast, but now that we haven't even seen The Gathering yet, I'm liking the pace.  Any guesses for what episode the wedding will be? I'm thinking 6 or 7.

I don't have cable at home so I've been watching with my mother. I'm used to watching things on Netflix and being able to watch episodes back to back. This whole waiting a week thing is KILLING ME.

Re: Outlander Episode 3 (spoilers)

  • I loved watching the chemistry between Claire and Jamie start to grow. They shared some pretty great looks this episode. So far I'm content with the pacing and the show overall. One of my male wine buddies is watching this show (he has not read the books), and is enjoying it. It's interesting to get a male perspective on it.

  • It's Rupert, and I LOVE him.

I have thoughts but have a meeting, gahhhh

  • I think I saw something that the wedding will be in episode 7.  I'm not sure if that is right or not, but I am ready for some sexy Jamie scenes!

It's been quite some time since I read Outlander, so I'm probably missing some of the differences. I really love the series so far and I think that the casting is awesome!

  • In my head, I pictured Rupert as older. But I'm loving him younger SO MUCH MORE.

I can't wait until they start traveling.  We'll see more Murtagh, Rupert, and Dougal.  What about Ned? I don't think I see him in the cast list on IMDB.  I can see why he would be eliminated, but I love him!

  • I love Rupert.

And dirty Jamie is sooooo extremely hot.

I don't know if I am liking Geillis though.  She seemed a bit more subtle to me in the book, but in the movie she seems more "in your face".  kwim?

  • Yeah, I asked DH what he thought of Geillis and he thought she was a psycho, but also one of those characters who could either totally come to your aid, or screw you over royally.  Which I thought was very intuitive, so maybe they're doing a better job than I thought.

I have to admit, I thought changing the whole progress of events with Claire at Leoch to boil down to the poisoned kid was pretty brilliant.  It's a single thing that they could squeeze into one episode, but it perfectly illustrates how Claire's reputation came to be (and how she managed to piss off the priest).  So the process was not at all the same, but the end result was exactly right.

The "vision" scene with Mrs. Fitz at the beginning was clearly just put there to piss me off and freak me out by showing it out of context in the previews for this episode. Grrr.

Funny anecdote... when Claire figures out the kid was poisoned, DH goes "she needs a bezoar!"  Hahahahaha

Also, Jamie: "You dinna expect me to be less bold than a wee sassenach lassie?"

I also really liked the Lily of the Valley poisoning vs. the Changeling baby.  I don't know that they really could really do the original scene justice in an hour to show the superstition surrounding Changelings and try to not cast the parents as totally heartless and cruel.  I think this was a nice compromise.

Ugh, I wanted to puke in my mouth a bit when I saw Jamie and Laioghare (or whatever).  It didn't bother me nearly as much in the book as it did in the show.

ETA:  So far I'm a fan of Geillis.  I think she's coming off pretty closely to what I expected her too.  Ugh, her husband? GROSS.

I think she's pretty perfect. They've got her doing the right amount of crazy.

I was wondering what your take would be on this scene.  I'm still undecided.

Totally saying it....I told you so.

  • Here was my only problem with the poisoning thing (btw, another DH-ism: "it's the Ricin!"  hahahaha) - it was how Mrs. Fitz got involved.  I didn't like that at all, because it paints the priest as a total bad guy and Mrs. Fitz may have loved Claire, but for her to throw the village priest out of the house like that?  No way.  I don't think it will matter because they can easily just leave her out of it when it comes time for the witch trial, but still.... not kosher.

I liked that they were able to put the superstitious suspicions and the priest's hatred into one thing, whereas in the event it actually took several different occurrences and the leg wound thing - it just wouldn't have worked.

Although, I did miss that we didn't get Jamie going to check on the Changeling.  That little scene gives you so much insight into who he really is.

OH! Also the scene where Jamie is sitting between Claire and Laoghaire?  PERFECTION.

I was giddy over this scene!!  MH doesn't get any of my excitement over these things.

He has also watched all 3 episodes with me and when I was talking about it yesterday he asked me which one was Jamie.  I said no more Outlander questions from him.

Yeah, you're right actually... I was kind of substituting that and the priest's wound and stuff for the poisoned kid, but it does happen after they get back to the castle. In the book, I guess she really doesn't have much of a rep yet, more of it happens after they get back.

I guess we'll just have to see...
