local-ish historical getaway

My grandfather is FINALLY retiring, the day before his 75th birthday. I want to get him either a year pass to somewhere (museum...or something) that he'll like, but I can't think of anywhere.

My other idea is to get them a mini getaway to somewhere. They can't drive for more than 2 or 3 hours, and they like historical stuff. Any ideas?

  • How far is Gettysburg? Philadelphia has a lot of historical stuff. Harpers ferry, WV (might be too far). DC is probably too far but I love their museums and they are free.

  • DC is a 2 hour drive.  My favorite museum there is one of the only not free ones, it's called the Newseum.  It's freaking amazing. You could seriously spend 2 whole days in that museum.

I wouldn't do DC, though it's awesome. My sister lives there and they go there often to see her...plus they'd have to walk a lot to get everywhere, and that's hard for them.
  • Has he been to all the museums in Philly? Honestly there is so much stuff here.  We did the National Constitution Center and it was really cool.  We had a year pass to the National Constitution Center, and we really liked it.  But hubs is kind of a war buff.  He is on the Civil War Roundtable, he goes to battlefields for funsies.
  • What is he into? Does he like history? Art?

history. and they like antique shops and such. but they really can't walk around for hours and hours....maaaaybe gettysburg? i'll have to look at what there is to do there
  • How about Annapolis?  I loved that town and it wasn't as much walking as I expected when I went.  There's the naval academy that has walking tours (looks like an hour and 15 mins... idk if that's too much or not).  And a lot of historic houses and antique shops.  A good micro-brewery too.  I think it was called Rams Head.

Baltimore has Ft McHenry.  Looks like it's self guided tours.

  • I know a couple who just went to St. Michaels for a few days and loved it. Talked about the shops, boats, etc. I'm not sure how much "history" is there though.
