Re: Underrated Book Recs

  • Poison Princess (and the rest of the Arcana series) by Kresely Cole
All Our Yesterdays by Christin Terrell
    Irregular Creatures by Chuck Wendig
    Indexing by Seanan McGuire
Lexicon by Max Barry (for people who loved Ready Player One)
Clarity by Kim Harrington (this had a very Veronica Mars feel to the relationships between characters)

  • The Loop, by Nicholas Evans (not Sparks, Evans!) an incredible read about the reintroduction of wolves into Montana and an epic story of a multi-generation family.

The Sheriff Walt Longmire mysteries by Craig Johnson, starting with The Cold Dish. These books are amazing and everyone I know who tries one ends up hooked and raving about them. They're about a screwed up widower sheriff in rural Wyoming and the Native American culture is practically a character of its own.
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • Sabriel -Garth Nix (Fantasy)
    Roses -Leila Meacham
    The Heretic Queen -Michelle Moran
Truly, Madly -Heather Webber (cute romance)
All the Truth That's in Me -Julie Berry

  • These are the ones I wish more people read:

Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith (everyone knows A Tree Grows in Brooklyn)
Michael Bond's Monsieur Pamplemousse mysteries (everyone knows Paddington)
    Boris Akunin's Erast Fandorin series
Mary Stewart's non-Arthurian works, especially Airs Above the Ground and Nine Coaches Waiting
Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland
E.L. Konigsburg's other works, especially The View from Saturday, Journey to an 800 Number, Father's Arcane Daughter (re-titled My Father's Daughter), and A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver
    Anniversary
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • One of my author friends, Jennifer McGowan, writes a YA historical series called "Maids of Honor" that doesn't get nearly enough hype. It's about spy girls in Queen Elizabeth's court. Each book is a companion novel featuring one of the girls.

    They're so good!

    I wrote this!
  • Burial Rites by Hannah Kent (lit fic)
Noggin by John Corey Whaley (YA)
Plain Kate by Erin Bow (YA fantasy)
The Joe Ledger series by Jonathan Maberry (thriller)
Any and all short story collections, but especially Tenth of December and Vampires in the Lemon Grove
Don't Get Too Comfortable by David Rakoff (essays, similar to David Sedaris)
How to Be A Woman by Caitlin Moran (memoir, humor)

  • One of my favorites is The Smoke Jumper, also by Nicholas Evans.

    My favorite Cake Wreck ever.

  • Unteachable - a sexy new adult coming of age kind of thing.

The fifth wave - YA, alien apocalypse. Bonus - the 2nd in the series is coming out in a couple weeks!

I read Maid of Secrets this summer and could not put it down. I have Maid of deception on my shortlist of ebooks to purchase once I am allowed to buy books again!
  • I just read The Faerie Guardian this weekend and loved it! PNR ladies, you must check it out!

  • My TBR list is getting longer and longer because of this post. Roses and Burial Rites especially sound super good. Yea.
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.
