MM rug options

So the flooring guys put down the first coat of poly today on our new hardwoods.  We absolutely love how they are turning out, and H and I are so happy we went with hardwood!

So now we're contemplating rugs.  We have 3 bedrooms and a large living room that all need rugs.  Two of the bedrooms are quite long - 11x24.  So in those two bedrooms we may do a rug under the bed plus a smaller rug under a seating area.

We also have a cat.  She's a treasure, but she's indoor only and does have claws.  She's usually pretty good about scratching her post, but I mean... she's a cat.  We have to assume that she's going to claw the rugs we buy once in awhile.

So I'm going to wind up buying at least 4 large rugs... possibly a couple more small ones too.  We don't need to buy them all at once, but it's definitely on our short list.  They need to be either cat-friendly or cheap enough that I don't feel bad when the cat (eventually) ruins them.

I've never bought a rug before - all of our previous apartments had carpet.  When I started looking at prices, I nearly had a heart attack.

What's the most MM way of going about this?  I'm sort of thinking of just buying carpet remnants and having them cut and bound into rugs.  It seems like the least expensive option, and we can get custom sizes.  H and I gravitate toward solid/neutrals when we've looked at rugs online anyway, so I don't think we'll miss the big patterned options that rugs offer.

Help?

Re: MM rug options

  • Well, I learned this the hard and costly way. If you buy wool, DO NOT by India wool. It sheds like crazy and will be all over the place, your feet, and your cat. I have been pleased with the rug quality from Home Depot, Home Decorators, and Ballard Designs. But, most of these wool rugs they sell are India wool, which I now avoid.

Home Depot also has a program where you can get custom sized rugs made out of their carpet options. This might be a good choice for you.

  • Do you have a garden ridge near you? I've bought several rugs from them, and have been happy. They aren't super high end, but are very reasonable so I won't have a heart attack if my kid spills grape juice on them. The last time I was rug shopping I went their first and got 2, even better they were clearance so they were 1/2 priced!!!
My parents have even bought rugs from them and put them in the van to drive them back to SD since they were so much cheaper than anything they were finding around there. My mom couldn't believe the prices when I told her, and she had the same set for about 8 years and just gave them to a friend because she was finally sick of them.

  • Do you have a Home Goods near you?  They always seem to have a great selection of rugs at decent prices.  Or you could just do without.  We have only hardwoods and not a stich of rug anywhere but inside the front door.

  • we have a rug outlet near us that had decent prices....once you get over that it's going to cost a few hundred for a decent sized rug.

Occasionally I see good deals at TJMaxx (same vein as Home Goods...so check there or Marshall's).

I also often see good deals on MYHABIT...but I don't like that you can't feel the texture of the rugs...however CompanyC rugs are amazing...and sometimes they pop-up there with decent prices.

we've lived in our house 2 1/2 years and have hardwood and tile everywhere, we still need (want?) a nice rug for the master bedroom and the guest room.  Our two cats have claws and they mostly leave the rugs alone...they have a very nice cat tree (yes I once spend $80 on a 7' cat tree) they spent a good amount of time climbing and clawing that instead of the rugs or furniture, so I guess it was a good investment.

  • I love www.rugsusa.com. They always have a sale going on (currently a 70% off for labor day which goes on until the 5th). When that sale ends another one will start up so there is no rush. Shipping was super quick on the rugs. I also second checking out home goods. They usually have some large sizes.
  • Check out the daily deals section of eBay--there are some great rug deals in the household section.

yeah, rugs are not cheap!  I have 2 that I really LOVE - 1 under the dining room table and 1 under our coffee table.  I got the big one at Nebraska Furniture Mart, but it was 5 or 6 years ago and I don't really remember the cost.  Do they have rugs at IKEA?  The smaller rug I got at a local furniture store here -  I walked in the door and it was the first thing I saw and absolutely fell in love with it so I snatched it up.  Lots of blue, dark brown and green squares.  Lowes has some pretty decent rugs as well - defiantly check them out.  We got 2 small rugs for under the oven and kitchen sink from lowes - it's a pale blue with a pretty oriental floral pattern that matches the wall art we have in our family room.  I'm all about connecting patterns throughout the house.

  • We have several wool rugs from Pottery Barn and love them- our entire house is hardwoods (except bathrooms). The one in our living room is 9X12 and fits nicely around the sitting area. We bought that one when they had a Friends and Family deal- 20% off on the rug. We also just ordered a wool one from Home Decorators for our bedroom- we ordered the smaller one 3.5x5.5 for our sitting area to make sure we like it before we buy the 8x11 for under the bed. We don't have any pets currently, but did have an american bull dog/pit mix and a cat (with claws) in the house. The dog did much more damage than the cat- lots of superficial scratches on the hardwoods. Maybe one day we'll have them refinished, but with 2 kids, it's just not feasible right now.

  • These are all great ideas - we do have a garden ridge and a home goods... and I think we'll be going very close by both this weekend anyway, so I will pop in and see what they have!  I've also never heard of rugs USA, but I will definitely check them out too :)

I'm probably just going to have to get over the price of what this is going to cost.  We have room in our budget, I'm just struggling with spending that much on something I'm fairly certain will eventually be ruined by the cat.  She's pretty well-behaved so it will take time, but still.

  • We have tile and hardwood throughout our house and we only have a large rug in the living room under the coffee table, a small rug in front of our stove, a small round rug in DDs room, and two bathroom rugs in the bathroom (one in front of the tub and a long one in front of the double sink). We got the kitchen and bedroom ones at walmart, the bathroom ones at Target, and the living room one at Amazon. I find their prices to be fairly great. We have a German Shepherd who is teething/digging and has yet to ruin the carpets.

  • I bought most of mine from homedecorators.com.  Although, I was a little leery of buying a rug online, they had the best selection and price.  Plus, most of the rugs had reviews, which were pretty much spot on for the rugs I bought.

Target's website and Wayfair.com also have decent prices and a great selection.

Also, if you are just looking for neutral colors, I found some on sale at Bed Bath and Beyond and Kroger (yes.. the grocery store. It was random).  I got a huge, plain gray rug at BBB for like $50! Then I later saw something similar at Kroger for like $30.

Finally, aren't you in Georgia?  If so, you might want to check out some of the places in Dalton.  I've never shopped for rugs there, but I could see it being worth the drive.

Our cats have not done much damaage to our wool rugs, however when we have had the loop rugs they've done real damage to those, I think they can really work their claws under the loops to shred the rugs.

I also keep their nails fairly short, mostly out of fear that a good swipe at the dog's face could do real damage to her eyes, but I think that helps a lot with furniture damage.

And they have crazy sales! Like today is still 70% off. We have 3 area rugs from there that we bought last year and they still look great! We also have a giant area rug from Ikea in our dining room. That one has been awesome too.

Haha yes.... I was actually born in Dalton, and my parents still live there.  That's why I was thinking of just getting some carpet remnants bound.  There are places there that will do it for like $1.25 per linear foot (so under $50 for an 8x10), and we go up there pretty frequently anyway.  Finding some remnants we like really ought to be a piece of cake - there are at least a dozen carpet places all on the same road near my parents' house.

For rugs, though, Dalton can actually get sort of high-end.  They get legit imports which will last forever but are $$$$.  We probably won't buy anything until I've had a chance to look there (just in case!), but I think the discount places will probably offer traditional rugs cheaper than what most places in Dalton will carry.  Dalton does not have a Home Goods, etc.

I hadn't thought to check grocery stores, but we might do that as well.  Poor H is going to get dragged around all sorts of home stores this weekend....

  • You can always start with some inexpensive rugs to protect your hardwoods while you take your time shopping for the right nice rugs.

...Christmas Tree Shop might be another place to check for something temporary.

  • We've bought most of ours from Home Depot, and they've held up very nicely to both our cat and dog.  What I love most is that I can take them to a different room that doesn't have hardwood and shampoo them.  The rug in our dining room see's the most traffic and dirt, and that one gets shampoo'd a minimum of 3 times/year.  We've had it 5 years, and it's held up.

  • Overstock has some great deals on area rugs of all price ranges.
A remnant or cut and bound piece  from a local mom & pop carpet shop where  you can talk with them about quality, etc.

I have all hardwoods and we have a large wool area rug in the living room and a medium size under DR table were purchased thru a local decorator.   Other small throw rugs for bedrooms- sisal, nylon and rag rugs were from Overstock.

  • Not necessarily MM, but I know Turkey is on your travel list and rugs are certainly a popular souvenir from there. Maybe more $$ than you want to spend, especially with pets, but our neighbors have several and really love them.
  • We had the same issue with our living room, which is 13 X 23. We ended up going to the carpet store and ordering a rug cut to the size we wanted.  We looked at their remnants but didn't see anything we liked.

We ended up with a custom 9.5 x 16 bound (and we got to keep the remnants which we use as a hall runner) for just under $500 and we're glad we did it.  Since you have a cat, stay aware from anything that has a loop/berber pile. Our cats are good about using the post too but they still snag those tiny little loops on the rug.

  • I got a beautiful neutral rug from Crate and Barrel.  It went on clearance shortly after we bought and I got a price adjustment (score!) and it's still on clearance.  Marked down from $1k to $500.  Still on the hunt for some area rugs for other rooms.

But I agree, when we first started looking at rugs, we nearly had a heart attack.  It pains me to spend so much money on something we walk on!
