Should I Re-Read The Shining for Dr. Sleep?

So I read The Shining a few years ago and I loved it. I loved it, but I don't remember all the beautiful details of it. I'm already thinking about what SK book to read this October (annual tradition) and I am thinking of Dr. Sleep since Mr. Mercedes doesn't seem to be so appealing. What do you think? Is Dr. Sleep worth it? Should I re-read The Shining or just pick a whole different SK book for October? Is it possible to read Dr. Sleep without rereading The Shining (doubting this)? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Re: Should I Re-Read The Shining for Dr. Sleep?

  • I was glad that I re-read the Shining, but I had read it many, many years ago.  Frankly, my recollection of the movie was a lot better than my recollection of the book, and they're different in a lot of ways.  So for that, I was really glad to have re-read before I read Dr. Sleep.  If you read it fairly recently (I would consider a couple of years to be relatively recent), and remember it well enough, I think you'll be fine without re-reading.
  • I agree with @SusieBW. I read The Shining in 2012 but didn't re-read it before reading Dr. Sleep. I felt it was close enough to not need a re-read, but I could see if it had been more than a couple of years, at least skimming a summary.
