Headaches!

I am suffering from some severe headaches recently. Yesterday lasted from 9 am - 1am and it was definitely a migraine by bed time. I am now getting a slow building one again and really want to try and avoid this one ruining my entire evening. I work on my computer alll day long and I'm wondering if this has anything to do with it.

Have any of you had issues with bad headaches during your pregnancy? How did you cope?

Re: Headaches!

  • Headaches are incredibly common especially in 2nd tri when you blood vessels expand and your BP drops.

For me it's mostly water consumption. If I am close to 100oz per day I typically don't have issues but if I am not around that amount or above I get a headache. I also drink a full glass at over night. Every time I wake up I drink water.

  • Lots of water (more than you would think is enough), a couple of Tylenol, and if that doesn't do it then a small cup of coffee.  Especially if you were a regular caffeine drinker before pregnancy.

  • Thanks, I guess I need to desperatly up my water consumption for the day. I usually have 16-20 oz at work so I will try and double that.

  • It's a balance so you don't pee every 15 min lol but it truly has made a difference.

Pretty much.  I jokingly brought in an extra package of TP to the office and told them I'm making up for my excessive bathroom trips.

On my desk I keep a 20oz water jug.  My goal is to empty it 4 times within my 9 hour day.  Then when I get home I drink 2 more full.  It's inane, but it's the only way to not get charlie horses at night and headaches through the day.

  • Definitely drink more water! I will easily down 48 oz during the course of a workday, plus more at home.

I only got 2 severe headaches my entire pregnancy. Both were early in 2nd tri. I let myself take a couple of Tylenol each time, but no more than one dose. It didn't always cut it, but between that and resting/napping, I got past them. I hope something works for you soon!

  • I know it's kind of crazy. I have heard 120oz thrown out. That sounds like someone who works next to a bathroom lol.

  • I've heard something like drink as many ounces per day as half your body weight in pounds. So if you weigh, for example, 140 lbs, you should drink at least 70 oz per day. I don't know if that's totally accurate, but it's probably not far off.

  • I had headaches every day for about five weeks early in second tri. Tylenol, caffeine (obviously not more than you'd be recommended during pregnancy anyway), and water. An OB friend recommended a magnesium supplement. My own OB was skeptical but said it wouldn't hurt, so I tried it. I didn't start it until I was about 17-18 weeks, which was when my OB said they'd usually taper off anyway, so I don't know if the magnesium helped or not. Warning: magnesium can cause loose stools. Which I realize might actually be welcomed by some of the pregnant women here, lol. Hope you feel better soon.

  • I would also try caffiene too. That was the biggest issue that caused my headaches my first pregnancy. This time, I made sure I had my cup of coffee every morning to avoid it. Now I only get headaches at night so I try to rest and drink water to help get rid of it. Hopefully they don't linger to long!
