Re: Transvaginal Ultrasound with a full bladder...

  • I had this done, I drank sooooo much water that I literally was on the verge of peeing my pants. The tech let me use the restroom to let out a tiny bit of urine so that I wasn't in agony from holding it and also wouldn't pee on her.
The transvaginal u/s took like 5 mins at most. They don't press on your bladder or your stomach at all. It really is fast and not too uncomfortable.

If you feel like you are honestly on the verge of wetting yourself you can pee a tiny bit just enough to get relief.

I've only had to have a full bladder for IUI, not ultrasounds, but I've learned to do a full bladder, but not an about-to-bust bladder, if that makes sense! So, "i really have to pee" feeling is good vs "OMG I can hardly walk and there's about to be urine dripping down my leg". With a full bladder, it's not that bad, with a REALLY full bladder, it sucks. Of course, I was more concerned with not peeing on the nurse (and told her I was sorry in advance if I did) vs it being uncomfortable, so maybe it IS a good distraction... :)

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

  • The process itself it's terrible, it's the full bladder that really sucks.  I once had an appointment go 30 minutes late. I was seriously crying in the waiting room because I had to pee so bad.  I hope you get in nice and quick :)

  • I've never had a transvag u/s with a full bladder.  I always go in with a full bladder, they start trans abdominally and then I can pee it all out and go back for the transvag.

Also, I agree with RAB that I always just go with the, I have to pee, but learned not to overdo the water.  I usually drink half of what they recommend and its perfect.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks, ladies! I have blood work scheduled for this Wednesday and then the ultrasound later this month so I have a bit of time to prepare myself! They told me to drink 2 or 3 large glasses of water so maybe I will stop at 2 and see how that works for me.

They are normally pretty on-schedule most of the time so hopefully that holds true for the ultrasound appointment!

  • I told my doctor I might pee on him.  He asked me to pee before the ultrasound= fail. I wouldn't try to do it with a super full bladder.

Come to think of it, this is also true for me. I've only had the abdominal ultrasound with a full bladder.

  • @nfp147‌ maybe it's a local thing? Haha, they don't want to risk getting peed on in our part of the world!

  • I only had a full bladder for my IUI's and ET. Those were rough because then you have to wait even longer after the procedure (20-40 minutes for me) to be allowed to use the restroom. Hopefully, your U/S is right on time though!

  • Well, I had my ultrasound today. Went in with a semi-full bladder and had to sit in the waiting room for 20 minutes before they called me back. The first thing she has me do? Go empty my bladder! So basically, I worried about the full bladder thing for nothing.

I spoke with the tech about my results a little as the ultrasound was going on but I probably won't hear from my doctor until early next week. Here's what I got from the tech tho...

The Bad News: I have a retroverted uterus. And she said my lining wasn't quite as thick as they would like it to be at this point in my cycle. She also said though that it could just be that she couldn't get an accurate reading because of the position of my uterus.

The Good News: I have a lovely, well matured follicle on my right ovary!

  • I had to have a full bladder for embryo transfers. At my last one, they had to bring in a bed pan. Not awesome. But I was GOING TO DIE if I couldn't pee.
