So a few weeks ago we sold H's 2 door 2011 Nissan Altima, because it wouldn't fit a car seat or stroller and this gave us an opportunity to get rid of the debt. Well, we bought him a 2004 Mazda 6 with 125,000 miles on it..... in cash!
A week after we bought it, the starter went out of it. So H replaced that for $100 and we thought we were good to go.
3 days later he called me on his way home from work and said he was stranded on the road and his dad was coming to pick him up and help tow the car the rest of the way home. It's been 2 weeks since this happened and him and his dad finally got fed up with trying to figure out what was wrong with it, and the tow truck just picked it up today to take it into the shop.
My H is a very handy guy and has a show car that he has torn apart multiple times and put back together with modified parts. So buying a car in cash didn't seem like a big deal if it needed work. He has also put all new brakes on this car and changed out the throttle body part. All things that would have costed close to $800 total at a shop, and only cost us $300 in parts.
This is the first time ever that we've had to take a car to a shop to get fixed. Of course my H feels defeated, but he's been driving his show car the 100 miles/day too and from work for the past 2 weeks. It only gets around 19MPG's and doesn't run well in cold weather (it's more of a race car for the drag strip), and the high for Friday is supposed to be 50. So we know that he can't be driving it much longer, and if he were to change out the clutch himself at night and on the weekends it would take him 2 weeks to do it.
In this post, I feel like I need to say this..... I'm so happy that we have started getting our money in order and doing the Dave Ramsey Total Money Makeover. A year ago the thought of paying someone close to $1,000 to repair a car would have made us want to trade it in and buy something different. Now we realize that $1,000 was only 4 months of H's old car payment, and in the end we will still have a paid for vehicle with zero debt on it. It isn't going to phase us one bit to write a check for this because there is money in our E-fund and the budget to do this.

Re: H's car is in the shop :-(
E-Funds are an amazing thing. The relief you feel knowing you have it to fall back on is incredible.
Hope it costs way less than you anticipate!

My H's "new to him" car also ended up needing about $1000 in repairs right after we bought it (we're not handy) but has been a dream since. Hopefully your H's will be the same, and it's AWESOME you paid cash for it!
