Re: QOTD 9/11

  • No.  When I was in high school and college I think they did a moment of silence.

  • I try to observe a moment of silence. All of the memories of that terrifying morning have all flooded back to me. RIP to all of those who were lost that day.

I am just more mindful of all the lives lost throughout the day.

One of my bosses' son was a Marine.  He was killed in Fallujah in 2004.  So my boss takes off on 9/11 and the day his son was killed.  Obviously I wasn't working here then, but co-workers have told me that they couldn't get a hold of him at home that day, so the Marines actually came to the office to tell him the news.  Hesaw the uniforms and knew right away what they were there for.  They tell me that you could hear him just sobbing throughout the building.

His empty office always makes me sad on those days :(

(ETA: I shared this story because I think today is about people like that.  Not politicians or talking heads, but the way regular people were affected that day and after.)

@ramstein1027 your story brought tears to my eyes

  • Like others, just keep the people lost (civ, emergency personal, soldiers in the war on terrorism), and their families in my mind.

  • I just think about it.  Then I remember seeing people jump from the buildings and start to tear up.  That image has stuck with me after all these year.  Just horrible for all those that suffered.
  • I think a lot about the events of the day and the lives lost.  My uncle was in one of the Twin Towers and got out safe.  I am very thankful for that.  My mom's cousin's son was a firefighter and was there.  He was severely injured, but he also survived.

I was a freshman in college and having a bad hair day.  My class started before the attack and all I was thinking of was how bad my hair looked.  Then we got the news and my professor immediately ended class.  I spent the rest of the day feeling guilty for being so superficial.  That is always my first thought on September 11 :/

We are asked to address the attacks with the kids every year.  It makes me so sad that they no longer understand the severity of the attacks and how it effected us, partially because their entire lives have been post 9/11.  I am actually thankful that I am not working today so I don't have to talk about it.  I get a little more emotional every year teaching about today.
  • ETA:  I was 11 and home schooled when it happened so I had no idea what was going on (I'm also in Canada). I remember it being on the news all day but my family kept me away from the TV and weirdly allowed my younger brothers to watch.  Nobody talked to me about it until about a week later.

  • Not really. I think they did the whole moment of silence thing when I was still in school.

It's been interesting to see the amount of coverage in the area since I'm only minutes away from where the plane hit in Pennsylvania. They did some sort of service at the memorial site today I believe.

I did also find out that they have a memorial at my old college. http://upj.pitt.edu/heroesmemorial

  • I just keep in my thoughts and prayers everyone affected by that day. I was living in the States when it happened and it was an intense couple of days afterwards as the base we were posted to is the defense weapons depot for the Gulf of Mexico and got locked down for 2 days.
