Recommend your favorite mystery series

I drive a ton for work and listen to audiobooks on the road.  I've found that mysteries hold my interest the best (that and Nora Roberts but I've worked my way through all of her books).  I like starting series with a bunch of books and working my way through them.  I am nearing the end of the Rizzoli and Isles books by Tess Gerritsen and need to start ordering a new series.  Are there any you would recommend?  Ones I've read already include: Kay Scarpetta series, Victoria Thompson's Murder in NYC books, Maisie Dobbs series, Lisa Gardner's books, the Bones series, John Sanford's Lucas Davenport series, and the Women's Murder Club series.  Thanks for your suggestions!

Re: Recommend your favorite mystery series

  • I know I say this all the time on here, but the Sheriff Walt Longmire series is amazing. Craig Johnson.
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • I don't know how these are as audiobooks, but if you liked Lisa Gardner's books then you could try Tami Hoag. I enjoyed both when I was reading them all years ago.

  • Try Michael Connelli's Harry Bosch series. Bosch is a homicide detective, and they're set in LA.
  • Susan Wittig Albert's China Bayles series is quite good.

Boris Akunin's Erast Fandorin series is very good, and each book is written as a different style of mystery.  I'm not sure they're all easily available in the US though; I think only the first 5 were published in the US.

Kerry Greenwood's Phryne Fisher series is quite good and entertaining.  I read all but the last two and then passed them on to my Dad, who is loving them.

Charles Finch's Charles Lenox series is an interesting read as well.

Not a series, but I find Marian Babson's mysteries different and engaging, though I know some readers dislike them because it's often well into the book before the the body drops.

And they're not all murder mysteries, but Michael Bond (yes, the Paddington Bear author) has a series with a French restaurant critic that are comedy movies in book form, very good for moments when you need a light bit of a mystery.

Lastly, I'll recommend Barbara Cleverly's Detective Joe Sandilands mysteries -- the first part of the series is set in 1920's-30's India during waning days of the British in India and they are very good, very descriptive.

  • I really enjoyed Michael Connelly's Mickey Haller books.  I think the first one is The Lincoln Lawyer?  I have listened to some of the Harry Bosch ones too and they're pretty good, but I prefer the Mickey Haller narrator.

I just listened to A is for Alibi (Sue Grafton) and it was okay.  I know there are a ton of those.  The best part of that book was that it was written so long ago that cell phones weren't a thing so I thought the references to answering services and film cameras were kind of amusing.

  • Not a series but if you like Nora Robert's mystery/thrillers, try Sandra Brown.  Hello Darkness and Envy are my two favorites but also Lethal, Play Dirty and Smash Cut.  I think they are similar to NR.

  • Are you okay with supernatural stuff? If so, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files mysteries are fun. I also LOVE the Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger.

  • Karin Slaughter has two good series - The Grant County series and the Will Trent series.

I second both of these. Gail Carriger is highly entertaining and I just finished the first Dresden Files book and it was fun too.
