QOTD 9/17

edited September 2014 in October 2012 Weddings
Yesterday on the Tiday show they were talking about public bathroom etiquette. There were two "rules" that jumped out at me. One rule was don't flush the toilet with your foot and another was don't open the door with a paper towel.

Do you do either of these? Do you have any other "rules" that you wish people would follow?

Re: QOTD 9/17

  • I flush normally, wash my hands, and then open the door with a paper towel.  I feel like the #1 fule of bathroom etiquette should be wash your hands.  I wouldn't use a paper towel to open the door if I knew 100% of people washed their hands after using the bathroom.  But there is a shocking number of people that don't wash their hands...
  • I flush with my foot if the bathroom is especially grody. Otherwise it's normal.

And yes the weirdos talking to others in stalls. Unless you're asking for TP, you be quiet so I can pee in peace.

  • I do both those things because I don't like leaning over a toilet and havng my face exposed to those germs when I flush.  I try to open the doors with paper towel because some people don't wash their hands.  I hate when people don't flush

I'm somewhat of a germaphobe, so I flush with my foot and use a paper towel to open the doors.  I'll even use some toilet paper to unlock to door if the bathroom is super nasty.

Only rule that I can think of that people should follow is to clean up after yourself.   It's not that hard to flush the toilet and throw away your sanitary products appropriately.

I should confess that I have never once flushed a public toilet by hand.   [-X  Always use my foot.

  • I'm guilty of both of these if it seems like a particularly skeevy bathroom.

I'm a firm believer in the buffer stall.  If there are more than two stalls, seriously, you don't need to use the one right next to me!

  • I am very guilty of the foot thing. I've known quite a few people who do use paper towels on the door.

Honestly all this is reminding me of is an episode of Mythbusters where they were testing bacteria growth on hands after using the bathroom.

  • It's funny that this was the QOTW. I was going to post about the buffer stall in WTF Wednesday!

  • I use my foot if it's a low handle. If it's a high handle where I'm having to turn into a ballerina to flush with my foot or one like a normal home toilet, I'll use my hands.

I think you should get off the phone, and I think you should also leave the comments about smell, etc. out of the bathroom. It's a bathroom. It might stink. Think it, don't say it.

  • I don't use my foot to flush a toilet unless the bathroom is really gross.  Even then, I might just use toilet paper.  People using their feet breaks the handle which is why so many public toilets don't flush well.

I usually use a paper towel to open the bathroom door because like most of you said, people don't wash their hands.  I actually find it gross that restaurants have to have the sign that says "Employees must wash hands before returning to work."  That should be a given, especially since everyone working in a restaurant are adults.  I know they are required, but it still grosses me out.

I don't think people should poop in a public bathroom, especially at work.  It is so gross.  There's this one woman at my job who does at the same time every day, then sprays so much air freshener that you choke on it.  I've gone in 20-30 minutes after she's been in there and the air freshener is still thick in the air.
  • I always flush with my foot. I never use paper towel to open the door though. A lot of bathrooms only have hand dryers, so there's no paper to use. I really like the bathroom doors that you can push open...I use my elbow for that.

I completely agree that people need to be more tidy in public bathrooms. Seriously, how hard is it to throw TP in the toilet and flush?!
