Re: QOTD 9/19

  • I hate shots, but H is insisting that I get one this year. I'm such a baby and have to lay down so that I don't pass out...it's quite the production, haha!

  • This will be my first year getting one.  Doctors get really pushy about flu shots when you are "with child."

  • Haven't thought about it!  Maybe

  • Yes, I get one every year, i work at a school and that equals sick germy people all over the place! I cant afford to be sick when i have DD at home!

  • I honestly don't know. I know they're offering it as a complementary service at my workplace, so I may take them up on that offer. I don't honestly remember the last time I had one though.

  • Nope!  I never have and never will.  So many people get sick even after getting the shot so I don't see the point.

  • ^^^ You can't get the flu from the flu shot. The flu shot is an inactive virus, so it's impossible to get the flu from the shot. You can have a low grade fever as your immune system responds, but it doesn't last very long at all (last time I got the flu shot, I had a fever the next night...it didn't last long, just that night).

The flu shot gives you a 60% change that you WON'T get the flu. It may not be perfect, but it's better than nothing.

  • It's mandatory for school.

  • Yes.  I should have done it yesterday when I went for allergy shots, but O was getting fussy so I wanted to be in and out.  I'm getting it next week because O will get some of the antibodies through breast feeding.

I used to not, but I got it 2 years ago when my nephew was too small to get one, then last year because I was pregnant and now this year to protect O.
  • Yes, I will get it in October when I go in for my yearly gyno appt.

  • @brainybrunette have you thought about the nasal mist?

  • @WillyH19 I did get the nasal mist one year when I was in college. I think it was when it first came out and it was the only year that the student health center had it. It hasn't been offered to me since then. I think most of the mist vaccines go to pediatric offices because it's been shown to be more effective than the shot in kids. I asked H if his office had the mist and he laughed at me, said no, and told me to suck it up....sigh

  • I should. Last year was the first year in a long time I haven't gotten one, and I was okay, but working in an elementary school, I really don't need to take the chance.

  • Yup, got it at the hospital and I made H and my parents get it and whooping cough. Well dad is still working on the flu shot.

The second response is probably one of my favorite explanations of how the flu shot works.

  • It's mandatory to get one at my job BC I work in healthcare. With T starting daycare I want to try and be as protected as we can! H's job gives them free so he gets one every year as well.
  • @mana, that was a great explanation! Like I said, I get it 95% of the time, and I knew that you couldn't get the flu from the shot, but I never knew the science behind it all. It's fascinating!

  • @xxjen015 - I was never against it but I only got it once I'm college, and last fall because we were TTC. I never knew about herd immunity or any of that. After that post I got serious about shots for adults. Thus "making" the people going to be around E daily to get theirs. H was convinced he got the flu the other week from the shot... I had to school him.
