Vent (sorry!)- Frustrated/Upset for my Parents

I just need to vent for a minute because I feel so bad for my parents. They are both very hard workers (my mom has worked 7 days a week for as long as I can remember and still does), and it seems they can never catch a break. Any time they start to get ahead it seems they just get pulled further down.

Both my parents were in pretty bad accidents last year, which has left them with mild, but forever injuries to their backs/necks. They both received settlement checks from insurance (not as much as you would think for permanent injuries, but something none the less) so with those checks they were finally going to make some much NEEDED upgrades to their house. One being a new roof- it was leaking and definitely need repair, and then they were going to put siding on the house to remove the abestos that is currently there and put some insulation up to help with heating/cooling costs. Nothing crazy, just functional, necessary upgrades. They have finished the roof project, and it looks great! So they had someone come out to look at the siding project and they found out they have a terrible termite infestion. UGH! They have to basically rip out the walls in the kitchen now and replace them all. I just hate that they're going thru this right now. They're trying to so hard to get ahead to no avail. And god only knows if they're in the rest of the house, and how bad they actually are. The house was built in the 1800's so it's very old, and I guess these things are "expected."

From a MM standpoint I have to say I wish they planned for these things, I wish they had an emergency fund to deal with these situations or paid for yearly extermination on their house. They're in a lot of debt already. The MM side of me initially told them to pay off debt with their settlements, but now I know that's not possible. And I wish they didn't have so much debt making this whole situation harder, but I can't change that.

So anyway I guess I'm not really looking for advice, I just really needed to vent. :( Rough day today. I realize these things happen all the time, and it's pretty common I just feel like they've been thru so much lately, and I was really hoping they were finally catching a break.

If anyone has any experience with termites or anything it might be helpful. I'm really hoping I can help them as best as I can, I at least plan to help them clean out the house and hopefully get them in touch with someone good to do the termite inspection/treatment. My advice to my mom was to treat them before replacing anything, otherwise it wouldn't be much help to replace anything.

Re: Vent (sorry!)- Frustrated/Upset for my Parents

  • I'm so sorry :(  It's so hard to watch family go through times like that.  You're so good to help them how you can.  Sending lots of T & P their way!
  • I'm sorry.  It's definitely hard watching your parents struggle when you know that things could have been done differently to prevent this.

One thing to keep in mind is to make sure this isn't what you're doing.  Change your family tree for yourselves and your future family.

  • I'm sorry! It is hard to watch people you love struggle like this.

We have had termites before. If terminex exists in your area, give them a call. They can lay a barrier treatment around the house which is supposed to last for 10 years to ensure that they don't come back for a long time. I believe the cost was like $800 but did include a years worth of warranty and return inspections. Ours wasn't bad enough to require us to rip out walls and replace, so at the very least it may be worth getting a second opinion on that part.

Are you in a position to help them by giving them financial peace university or the book? It maybe something hat may encourage them to keep going and on track to pay off things.

  • Thanks everyone. I just really need to vent this morning, I guess I'm just in a mood today.

I have talked to my mom a few times about sitting down and going over DR's book together, TMM, but she hasn't seemed receptive. I think she's just a little nervous to face the facts and get it together, I think a lot of people are in the position intially.

I really hope we can get this all squared away without any additional debt incured! At least they have some of the settlement to cover it, but I hope it's enough.

Thanks again for listening everyone :D

  • At this point I would just give her a copy of the book.  Then it's in their hands on whether or not they read it, but the tools are there.

  • Have you made any inquiries to see if there are grants or state aid for asbestos removal?  Sometimes there are tax breaks or other perks for people who are making positive changes on their houses.  I don't know how old your parents are, but there may be some benefits on your state's elder assistance page (or check AARP).  Perhaps they qualify for a home tax break or home improvement tax break.

Sucks when bad things happen to good people.  Hope things turn around for them.  Maybe they will find gold bars in the walls of their house!
  • Does the asbestos even need to be removed?  As long as it remains in place and covered, it is causing no harm.  You open a can of worms by removing it as well as incurring a $$$ bill.

  • I'm sorry to hear about what has happened.  I live in a major port city and there is a huge termite problem here because of it.

In fact, my bank required a termite inspection done before closing before they would underwrite the property.  There was a little bit of old, previous damage under the porch, but no current activity.

After I closed, I called Terminix as a preventive measure.  The initial treatment was $1800 (my house is about 2000 sf).  Then they inspect and re-treat once a year for about $280.
