MIL's spending is driving MW and I crazy (rant)

My MIL this weekend suggested that we only give gifts for the children in our immediate family for Christmas.  Then come home tonight from work and my LO has a static cling book that MIL bought.

My ILs are struggling with their cost of living especially since SIL is in Catholic School and FIL is turning 60 next year.

MW has talked to her mother a lot about not spending so much money on our LO and that we have no more room in our house for more toys and her father doesn't like a ton of clutter at their home either.  Our LO has roughly 6 different peddle vehicles between the two houses.

  • It's frustrating! Can you suggest memories instead of gifts outside of Christmas and birthday? Like taking your LO to the park, library, etc? I remember so much more of what I did with my grandparents than the gifts they bought me.

  • Sell some of the stuff from MIL and put the $$ in an account for LO.
  • That is a super frustrating situation. I like Sisugal's idea of selling the extra toys and opening a savings account with the proceeds. I'd also be tempted to not accept future gifts into my house. I'd send anything that she brings over for LO right back out the door with her. Tell her your are just out of room and can't possibly store any more. Maybe once they're cluttering up her house, she'll feel differently.
  • I wish that would work, but FIL gets a trash dumper about every five years and fills it up.
