The Infinite Sea - Spoilers

Hmm. I don't know. I got through it, I didn't hate it, but I can't put my finger on what was wrong. I didn't really understand some of what happened, and the was ZERO character development with Cassie. I don't like that the book largely ignored who I thought were the series' main characters. I'm kinda left scratching my head.

Re: The Infinite Sea - Spoilers

  • Yes!! Me too. I mean, I liked - really a lot - where he took the story, in terms of using Ringer as ... what? A host or something? I'm not sure I get that. But I did like all that. I just felt like Cassie was damn near ignored, as was Evan, and as flawed as Cassie was, I really liked her. I wanted more. I was so irritated in the last 1/3 of the book (the whole Ringer part) that it wasn't going to go back to Cassie except for a few pages. (Yes I skipped and cheated!!)

I wouldn't have minded exploring new characters, but I was pissed that the MCs of the first book were sort of left behind. I think that's why I'm wavering on how much I liked this book ... because I didn't mind what he did, I just didn't like the parts he left out.

Plus the pacing was weird. Right? When you think about how much happened (or rather, didn't happen) in the first half or two-thirds, and then the whole Ringer thing ... I feel like most of the book took place over just a few days, and it wasn't all that action packed.

    Ugh.
  • Oh, what did you think about the whole thing where Evan is just a regular person now? I wonder how he's going to learn that he was never an alien to begin with. What a mindfuck that whole thing is, if you think of Evan's and Grace's perspectives, and how they've gone years thinking they were otherworldly.
  • It's a mindfuck for ME, I can't imagine how Evan and Grace would feel! You're human, then an alien, then human, then find out you were never actually an alien? How would you ever really feel comfortable as anything?

I think you nailed it - the story was good, I like the concept, I like the twisty-ness of it...but don't get me invested in your main characters, then ignore them in the second book. I mean, There was SO MUCH that could have been done with Evan! He's human "again"!!! How does that affect his relationship with Cassie? She finds out he ISN'T DEAD. That's a big deal, and we get pretty much nothing.

I'm confused over the whole host thing. So what Evan and Grace were is different from what Ringer is? Or is it the same?
