This is bound to get long (I'm wordy!), so stick with me!

Monday, September 8, I woke around 3:15 a.m. feeling crampy. I realized the feeling came and went, so I started timing. A couple of hours later, I was having fairly regular mild contractions averaging every 4 to 5 minutes. The doctor on call told me to hang out a while since they were't very strong (just like strong period cramps). Well, I didn't want to wait until they got unbearable, and they remained on average every 5 minutes, so around 8 a.m., we headed for the hospital.

L&D triage got me into a room, but when the doc checked me, I was still only 1 cm dilated (same as at my last appt 5 days before). She told me to get up and walk around for about an hour and she'd recheck me. So after about an hour of walking (and continued regular contractions) and then waiting for the doc, I'd dilated another cm. Not huge progress, but I was effacing too, so she said they'd admit me; this was happening!!

My progress was slow, but the intensity of the contractions was picking up. I made it to 3 cm, but the doc decided to start me on Pitocin. The contractions got way worse a couple of hours after the Pit was started. I toughed through them for a while, but by about 7 p.m. or so, I couldn't deal with it anymore. My inner wuss made her presence known! But...there was a wait! Apparently the anesthesiologist had a line to get through before he could do my epidural. The doc said they could give me an IV pain med to "take the edge off." I hadn't wanted to do IV meds, but I couldn't deal with the pain anymore. Well, the IV med didn't just take the edge off; it practically knocked me out!! I was totally loopy and don't remember anything between getting it and when the doc came to do the epi. I felt all drugged and like I was slurring my words. Not an experience I'd want to have again!

Anyway, after the epi, the doc checked me one more time that night. I was still only at 4 cm!! But I was comfortable now, so we decided to let me sleep overnight and get back to it in the morning. Around 6:30 I woke up to increasingly painful contractions on my right side. My epi was still working, but unevenly, it seems. After the doc checked me (I was up to 7 cm!!), I got a top off on the epi. I rapidly progressed to 9 cm, but then hung out in limbo waiting for a last little bit of cervix to clear out of the way. I needed a second boost on my epi, but a couple of hours after that, I was done waiting and ready to try pushing.

I ended up pushing for just under an hour. And all of it just to get her head out! Haha. It was hard work for sure, but then she was there and squalling on my chest while they clamped and cut the cord. The NICU team checked her over quickly, because there had been one tiny bit of meconium with one of my pushes. But she was healthy as could be! The doctor stitched me up (I had a 2nd-degree tear) while she got cleaned off. We spent about an hour of skin-to-skin time. She latched on and nursed a little. Then the nurses got her and me cleaned up and we moved on up to our recovery room.

From the time I woke up with those first contractions to the time Fiona was born, it was 35 hours. It was harder than I'd ever imagined, especially the stronger, Pitocin-amplified contractions. But after it all, I'm so thankful our little girl is finally here and healthy and beautiful.

  • She is beautiful! I, too, had IV drugs, and I wish I would have refused them. They made me completely out of it for 30 minutes or so. Not a huge deal. Just not ideal.

I hope BF is going well and you're getting the support you need to feed your daughter.
