SJS1013

I saw your post on QOTD and I was actually wondering how your house was coming along.  What is there left to do before y'all can move in?

I think we're going to be in a similar situation when this baby comes.  We haven't even finished our house plan, so it doesn't look like we'll be able to break ground until November or December if we're lucky.  I don't know how we're going to do it!

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Re: SJS1013

  • This got longer than I expected, sorry.

Thanks for asking @Mrshall1027!  The house has been quite the process.  Your house will probably move faster being built from the ground up than mine that is being remodeled.

My dad ripped out the kitchen right away and discovered that there was no insulation in the exterior walls.  The house was built in 1933.  There was also water damage, that we knew about, on some of the walls.  My dad had to rip out all of the exterior walls on one side of the house because of mold potential.  We had to have all the brick on that side of the house repointed (which means they grind out the morter and put new morter in).

Since the walls were plaster and built pretty much right against the brick, he just built studs and insulated right over the existing walls if there was no damage.  He was always planning to put up all new sheetrock to limit the exposure to lead paint for O.

He had to take off all of the moldings around the windows to put up the new walls.  In trying to put the moldings back up, my dad discovered they were in worse shape than he thought.  There was a lot of cracks, nail holes, paint (the moldings are stained), just neglect over the years.  He went out and bought new moldings and is putting them up now.

This week he is doing final plaster touch ups, primed and painted all the ceilings and he will be sanding the moldings and staining them.

Sunday, H's dad is coming and they are going to prime and paint the walls at least upstairs, hopefully downstairs too.  The Jewish high holidays begin this week.  H's family was supposed to celebrate Friday, but there was all sorts of drama and we are celebrating Saturday.  We have a long drive, so H and I can't go paint Saturday, or I would.  For the holidays, schools are closed tomorrow and Friday.  I may ask my mom to watch O and maybe I can go get some painting done.

The kitchen is finished, minus the back splash and paint.  We need shelving for the new pantry also.  The knobs and drawer pulls need to be installed, but H and I can do that.  We don't know what we are going to do about a back splash because what H and I like is way out of our price range right now.  We may just paint it all and do a back splash in a few months when we can save more cash.  Somehow, one of the floor tiles got chipped.  It seems like a defect.  My dad needs to chisel that out and replace the tile.

Next week, the floor guy is coming again to do a walk through and give a new quote.  Since we enlarged some door openings, we need to have some floor boards replaced.  When H told the guy work that we did, he said it probably won't change our quote too much.  I am hoping that the floors can be sanded and stained later next week.

My brother is doing all the plumbing.  He finished most of the radiators yesterday, but one that is giving him a problem with pipes.  The heater in the kitchen will be installed today or tomorrow.  He needs to hook up the sink, dishwasher, water line to the fridge and gas line to the stove.  The new vanity for the half bath should be in next week and he will hook that up then also.

After we move in, H and I are going to put new tile down on the hearth in front of the fireplace and put new tile on the fireplace.  The mantel needs to be sanded, stained and trimmed.  There are a few other small projects that I'd like to do after moving too.

I can't wait to share the before and after pictures with you.  I am so excited to move!!!
  • @mrshall1027 I don't know how much space you have in your parents' house, we have about 700-800 sq ft.  It's tight, very tight.  All of O's clothes are in Rubbermaid containers.  With all of our stuff and her stuff, it is difficult to stay organized.  Could we live here for a year? Definitely not.  2 months like this, while uncomfortable, is doable.  We probably would have been in the house already, but my dad had to take time off here and there to do things.
  • I'm looking forward to the pictures.  It sounds like you guys have put a lot of work into the house.  Hopefully you can get in there soon.  Babies require so much stuff, I can't imagine how cramped you guys are in that kind of space right now.  I hope everything goes smoothly and you're able to move in soon!
  • Oh wow!  I didn't realize you guys were remodeling to that extent!  I'm sure it's all going to be amazing and so worth the sacrifice in the end.  I loved our house after we finished remodeling and I always tell H how much I miss it.  There's nothing like that feeling of being settled in your home after so much work and waiting. :)  I can't wait to see all your pictures!

So, we lucked out because my brother moved out, so now we have access to 3 bedrooms upstairs.  We are in one, the girls are in another and then the 3rd is a guest room.  I'm trying to convince H to move the girls into the guest room so we can set up their room as a temporary nursery, but I think it will just depend on how long we think we'll be there.  If we can start building in November, we're hoping it will be done by June, so that wouldn't be too bad because the baby is due in May.  If we don't start building until next year, I'm definitely pushing for moving the girls.  The room that we are in has a king bed and takes up the whole room.  Same with the room that the girls are in.  The guest room has a queen and it's cramped in there too.  I'm more worried about closet space because they are super small.  We are using every one for our clothes but still have winter clothes packed away.  I'm a freak for organization and I know I'm going to have some minor (or major) freak out moments as time progresses.  I'm not looking forward to it at all!

  • We weren't planning to remodel this much.  We were planning to do the kitchen and half bath and just put a thin sheet of sheet rock over all the walls, then paint and do the floors.  The no insulation added a lot of work.
  • Wow that's a lot of work!
