I started interviewing with my company during my last semester of college, then accepted my position the Monday after graduation.
I know I should be appreciative of landing a position so quickly, I just don't see myself being happy where I am for very long.
While applying for jobs I just had/have this huge feeling that if I quit school a long time ago and continued working that I would be much further along in my career by now.
Has anyone felt this way?
Re: Why did I go to college?
I did feel that way for a long time! I couldn't get a job with my degree because I had no experience, and I couldn't get experience because I couldn't get a job. The job that I was working for required a degree, but it was simply about having the piece of paper, it didn't matter what it was in. I went to a private business school, and am still paying out the rear for it, but I couldn't get into my field.
6 years down the line, I fell into my current job, it was only as an HR assistant, but it paid the same as what I was making at my job, and the commute was 35 minutes less. Within 2 months, I was promoted and now run the department. It was worth every minute of waiting, because it is the perfect job for me currently.
Long story...not so short! Be patient and you will find the right job~
Be the change you want to see in the world!
I was working in retail before starting college and my boss recommended me for training as an assistant store manager - and while I was in school he found two of my coworkers positions as managers of their own stores. So, one of them could have been me.
Sometimes I think that would have been better but I make probably the same or more money in my job now, and I don't have the responsibility of taking care of a store and making sure it stays afloat - so I think it worked out in the end
FWIW I got hired by my co-op placement the week before I graduated from college and then found another job, where I worked for 6 years. They both sucked because of the politics of the office and I started looking into switching careers because I was just so done with it. An opportunity came up to try a position with a different office in my field and I decided to try it (one last kick at the can) and it is fabulous so I'm glad I stuck it out!!
