Can I have a relationship with my brother and nephews without his wife/their mom?

Hi everyone

I was wondering how I can have a good relationship with my brother and nephews when I don't particularly click with my SIL, and have made it rather clear to her?

I invite her to things, she refuses to go, and as a result I don't see my brother and nephews as much as I'd like. I don't dislike her...I just don't click with her.

She has made effort in the sense she will invite me to functions concerning my brother and nephews, and sends gifts/cards for me and my kids on holidays but does not attend mine.

Can I have a relationship with them outside of her? They are very young boys.

Thanks so much everyone

  • Well, as she is making the effort too - yes, you can. Remain cordial and polite with her, keep extending invitations, and if there is an appropriate time/event, perhaps ask to take your nephews out somewhere. I have a friend who watches her nephews ALL the time. She had a good relationship w her sister and BIL, but regardless - she spends a lot of time alone w/ just her nephews. You and your SIL don't have to be friends. But you do have to be respectful of her.

Have you spoken to her about this?

I think it's time that you take the bull by its horns.

What about your H? What does he have to say about all of this?

  • Alienating your SIL isn't going to do your relationship with your brother and nephews any good. I don't like my SIL at all, but I suck it up, because being rude to her would hurt my brother and my nephews and niece. You don't have to be BFFs, but you have to play nice. Remember that she is who your brother chose, so at minimum you need to be respectful of his choice.
