Ahhhh!

I have PCOS, and have never menstruated consistently in my life.  I had the gastric sleeve in January, and have had my period very regularly ever since.  I went in for an ultrasound to see if I had any follicles, I thought that it was a couple days past my ovulation, but there was nothing to be seen.  I had a blood draw for progesterone levels.  They called today and said that I didn't actually ovulate.  I am a wreck, it makes me fearful when we actually start trying.  I was trying to not get excited about the chance.

Any pointers on not getting my hopes up?

Re: Ahhhh!

  • Hi. Are you seeing an RE or an OBGYN? Are you actively monitoring your cycles via charting your temps and/or using OPKs? That is the best way to know if you're ovulating. If you aren't doing this already, I highly recommend taking the tutorials on FertilityFriend.com and start charting. It's easy to do and will help give you a good picture of what's going on. You can do this prior to TTC and chart to avoid, so if you're stressed about it... start now!

Don't freak out just yet! Plenty of women with PCOS and irregular cycles get pregnant both with and without medicated cycles. Just take a deep breath and take it one day at a time. Even if you're not ovulating, there are multiple options (Clomid, Femara, injectables) that will help you ovulate if you get to that point.

    Good luck!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

  • RockABye is very wise.

As far as not getting your hopes up, I suspect it's impossible. But, you should have your hopes up! It's a special time when you start TTC; try to have fun and not stress about it right from the beginning!

    Good luck.

  • We are not to the point of a RE quite yet. The reality is that my wife and I have been married less than a month, but my gyno gave Newsome false impressions to be honest. I am going to a woman's center on Monday that will actually be able to do the insemination when the time is right. I just didn't even realize how excited I was at the thought after putting in the "not an option" column of life for so long.

    Thanks for the responses!

  • If you're being inseminated, you *should* be monitored. If they see you're not ovulating/producing follies on your own, they will either cancel and start over with a medicated cycle for you. Or change in mid cycle and medicate you to help you ovulate. This is all assuming you're not ovulating on your own, this could be a fluke cycle for you, or you might just ovulate later than the "norm.

Try not to worry yet. Be excited!

Also, if you're going to be inseminated, I suggest a RE. That is their job, they know the best course of treatment for you. An obgyn helps keep you pregnant and guide your pregnancy, not get you pregnant.
