Hello all!  I'd like to introduce myself and hopefully become a welcomed regular poster.  :) I used to post on GP a while back, but haven't been active over there in a while.  There are also a couple of you on my wedding month board that may recognize me.

A little about me: I'm 30 and H is 31.  I have two beautiful stepdaughters who are 8 and 5.  We have a 1 year old schnauzer named Hans that holds a huge part of my heart.  We've been married since October 2012 and met on Match . com.  We are currently living with my parents (cringe!) and working on building our dream home.  We're hoping to break ground by the end of the year, but this process has already taken a lot longer than we anticipated!  I'm in the IT field and have run our business with my dad since 2003.  My husband joined the company last year and it's been booming ever since.

My H and I went through some fertility treatments last year that weren't successful, so we decided to take a break and work on getting healthy.  I started doing to the PCOS diet and exercising regularly.  In May, I had my first natural period in Lord knows how long which I was so excited about.  But, when August came around and I hadn't gotten another, I made an appt to see my OB for Provera.  Well, they did the routine urine test and it came back positive!  That was the biggest surprise of my life!

As my ticker shows, I'm at 9w4d and my next appointment is October 15th.  I've had a few ultrasounds already and we were able to see the heartbeat at the last two.  I was at 7w2d at the last one and my OB said everything looks great.  I still can't help but worry.  Which brings me to my question and I don't want to upset anyone, so if you've had a loss before and could possibly be upset or hurt by reading a question regarding previous loss experience, please do not read below.

Warning - question about loss below.  Please don't read if it may upset you.

Has anyone experienced a loss after seeing a healthy heartbeat?  My biggest fear right now is that I'll go in for my next appt and they'll say the baby stopped growing at X weeks.  I know there's nothing that can be done to save a pregnancy this early, but I just can't help but worry and I'm even losing sleep over it.  My OB said the chances of miscarriage are really low after seeing a HB but I'm naturally a pessimistic person, so I can't help but think the worst.  I appreciate any input you might have. :)

Re: Intro and question

  • To be honest, at my ultrasound for my first pregnancy we saw a flicker of a heartbeat, but they could not measure it. I wasn't as far along this time when I had my first ultrasound and they had no problem measuring the heartbeat.

As long as you had a measurable heartbeat, chance go down.

Thanks for sharing your experience.  At the US where we first saw the HB, it was done at a radiology clinic and the technicians are not allowed to tell you much if anything at all, and they didn't report to my doctor what the heart rate was.  At my second one, my OB said the machine she was using didn't measure the heart rate, but that it was beating faster than mine so everything was fine.  So, I guess that's why I'm a little more nervous because I don't know what the heart rate is.

  • Congrats and welcome to GPM! I recognize you from GP so I'm sure others will too.

I did not have an ultrasound before discovering both my losses, but the stats say less than 5% after seeing the heartbeat so try to relax (if you can).

  • Congrats and welcome!

During our second pregnancy, we saw a HB at 6w1d, went in for a viability scan at 7w1d, saw the HB strong. The next week I started bleeding, went in, and the baby stopped growing at 7w2d. So it's possible, but not probable. Just hang tight. There's nothing you can do at this point to prevent it if it's going to happen. But it's not likely, so just go with it.

  • Congrats! I don't have any experience with loss, but it is my understanding that miscarriages after seeing the heartbeat is a lot less common than before. Pregnancy, particularly early pregnancy, is such a mind fluck. I hope you have a good next appt.

  • Both of my losses occurred after seeing a heart beat. I won't go into details because I don't want to worry you unnecessarily, although I certainly understand your concern.

So yes, it's definitely possible to lose a baby after seeing a heart beat, but the risk is very low, and the risk of it happening twice in a row is exceptionally low. I just had extraordinarily bad luck.

  • Congrats!! I feel like I remember your profile picture from when I started on GP (maybe Jan 2014ish??) but I can't remember your old sn.

As for your question, I absolutely do not want to scare you so if you're having a stressful or nervous day, ignore my response but I wanted to be honest.

With our first pregnancy, I had spotting at 7d4w and went to the ER. They did an U/S and we saw a perfect baby measuring right on track and a perfect HB. They assured me that I had a 90% chance of a normal pregnancy and sent me home. The next day, the bleeding got worse and a repeat U/S showed that everything had passed. We lost our angel at 7w5d.

I am now 16 weeks (tomorrow) with a perfectly healthy baby. I had an U/S at 7w and I have to admit I felt very little relief when the tech pointed out the flicker. For most, the heartbeat is a world of relief but I had a hard time relaxing until about 13 weeks and even now still have my bad days. A friend loaned me her doppler as well and you better believe we don't miss a night of listening.

The best thing that I try to remember is that every person and every pregnancy is different and no amount of stress or worrying will change the outcome. Today, you are pregnant. Congratulations!
  • Eek! I've been wondering how you've been doing. Congrats!! And of course welcome back and welcome to GPM! :)

We were contemplating going straight to IVF since I over stimulated on the injects cycle we did.  Didn't want to spend all that money again just to cancel the cycle again.  But, hopefully all will go well and we won't have to worry about that!

Congrats to you as well!  I don't remember if I was still active when you announced but I did see your BFP post and I was so happy for you!
