  Well, a housewarming party is not necessary at all. You can just invite friends and family to your home at any time individually or in small groups for any occasion and not call it a "housewarming".
  
  Watch Football game on TV with pizza/snacks?  etc.
  You can do an afternoon open-house - starting the new year in a new house etc.
  
  (Please do not look at a housewarming as a gift occasion)

  It is our first house and we are people who like to have get togethers so we were looking forward to a housewarming to invite our friends in a grand way. Not for a gift way but thanks for the information.

  My boyfriend and I are also set to close on our home around this time. We're planning on doing a housewarming in December. If people can't make it due to holiday craziness they can always look at our house at the next gathering!
