Menu Monday

Bonus Question: How do you grocery shop? Same day every week? Once a month? With a list? Do you go in without a plan?

Vellichor: The strange wistfulness of used bookstores

Re: Menu Monday

  • I usually go after church on Sundays. I have a specific list that I try not to deviate from too much. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't.

Monday: Chicken & Dumplings, Roasted Cauliflower

Tuesday: Grilled Chicken Thighs, Mac & Cheese, Mixed Veggies

    Wednesday: Spaghetti, Salad, Garlic Bread

    Thursday: Leftovers

    Friday: No idea.

  • I'm totally going into this week without a plan!  We haven't been grocery shopping.
Usually we go on Thursday or Friday for groceries and I have a meal plan set up for at least until the following Thursday and grocery shop with that information.

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to."
    "I don't much care where –"
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

  • We are in operation eat whatever is in the house mode this week. So, creativity will be needed. Especially since our oven is not working so everything will have to be made on the grill, stove or crockpot. It might be really interesting...

Now I am jealous. I love living in the country, but grocery delivery would be amazing!

It's totally a luxury, but I indulge myself. It's only $3.99 for delivery, so not too bad. I spend less in geeneral, because I stick to my list and there are ZERO impulse buys.

Ah, the benefits (and laziness) that come with living in Silicon Valley. We pay for it in cost of living and housing prices, though.

  • Bonus Question:

We usually shop on the weekends and I'll stop Wednesdays after work if we need anything. We go to Costco once a month and stock up on meats and anything we buy a lot of, such as beer, coffee, etc. and I'll pick up some fresh produce.

On the weekends we go to the regular grocery store. I have lots of stuff that I keep in the house and I'll buy anything that's running low (brown rice, beans, pasta, broth, flour, sugar, etc.). I usually decide what we're eating for the week on Sundays since we usually eat with family on that day. I'll go on Pinterest or dig through my cook books and make a list of things we need. I try to stick to recipes that don't have a lot of stuff we'll need to buy.

  • I know I'm late but last night's dinner was awesome, so I'm posting anyway ;)

Sunday - Brats, grilled fingerling potatoes, homemade coleslaw

Monday - Open-faced Apple Cheddar Grilled Cheese on Sourdough (OMG) and spinach salad with lemon garlic vinaigrette

Tuesday - Crockpot shredded chicken fajitas

    Wednesday - Buffalo Chicken Casserole

Thursday - Ham and Egg sandwiches with tater tots and honeyed pears

Friday - baking Apple Cider mini donuts, eating out

I take Fridays off cooking and we get take out or go out, then I meal plan and write my list on the weekend, and I shop for the next week on whatever day makes sense based on our plans (Sat, Sun, occasionally Monday).

I could NEVER have groceries delivered.  I stick pretty closely to my list in theory, but I make last-minute changes based on what produce looks good and/or is on sale, what inspires me to make a swap, etc.

  • Tuesday:  Fried Eggs over Creamy Polenta "Grits", Citrus Sorbet
Wednesday:  Easy Mexican Skillet Bake, Chips & Salsa
Thursday:  Chicken Fingers, Yellow Rice, Green Beans
    Friday:  Fish & Chip night
Saturday:  Hearty Beef & Barley Stew, Crusty Rolls, Carrot Cake
Sunday:  Creamy One-Pot Lemon Pasta, Broccoli, Popovers, Carrot Cake
    Monday:  do-it-yourself dinner

Bonus questions:  I shop once a week, usually on Tuesday, but I'm moving it to Wednesday as the shops have re-done their weekly specials.  I plan meals for the week and then create a shopping list based on those.  I usually do not stray too far from the list unless I happen to see something on a really good special or I have a craving for something while I'm in the store (usually fruits are my worst impulse purchases).
