Switching to T-Mobile

Since it comes up in conversation frequently around here, I thought I'd share that H and I went last night to start the process of terminating our Verizon contracts and switching to T-Mobile.  It took awhile, as cell phone stuff always does, but was pretty straightforward and I don't think there is really going to be a catch.  We went to a smaller data plan since streaming Pandora does not count against your data with T-Mobile and that's a huge chunk of our data usage.  We are also getting (hangs head in MM shame) the new iPhones-but-since T-Mobile spreads out the cost over 2 years (0% financing) even with the new phones our monthly bill is going to be less than it was with Verizon already.  With our trade-in credits my phone (I got a lower-storage model than H) will be paid off in less than a year and then it will be substantially lower than it was with Verizon.  They also offer a better employee discount for H's company.

Once we get our last Verizon bill, we'll upload to  a website and then get a Visa gift card in the mail for the full amount in 4-6 weeks.  You can use the card to pay the bill directly if you don't mind being a hair late paying it, or borrow from savings and use the card for other things.

Where the catch seems to come in is if you want a new phone before 2 years is up, you have to pay off your current one.  I'm not too worried about that however; if something crazy happens we'll just do it but I have always gotten two years out of my phones.  I like not being tied into a contract as well.  If you go over on data they also don't charge for that, they just throttle down your data speed.

I'll let you guys know if anything crazy happens...

*Disclaimer: It would be way more MM to not have iPhones or use so much data at all, and I own that*

Re: Switching to T-Mobile

  • Good for you!! I was also looking into that as well, but decided not to based on the crappy service reviews. Also, my parents have T-Mobile and they were always dropping calls like crazy. They do live in a woodsy area so they had to be outside to use the phone. They would also call us from the our in-state casino and the calls would drop. We've had no issue with Verizon anywhere, so that made me VERY hesitant to switch.

Luckily I was due for an upgrade at the end of the month, so I got an email about an early upgrade so I made some cheaper changes savings us about $15/month and I am happy about that.

Hope the service works out well for you, I know it's a great deal though.....!

Thanks!  Good job getting your bill down, that's so tough with Verizon.

I should have mentioned we're in a medium-sized city.  H sometimes works in the woods and is expecting poor service there but he has a work "dumb phone" for emergencies.

A big part of our motivation was that I was locked into a phone for another year that was already starting not to work well at all.  H's phone was still fine but he's been frustrated by the hefty overage charges from Verizon and is also easily swayed by the latest technology.
