Holiday Exchange Idea

I'm not trying to step on toes, and we can do both things or not do this at all, but I have been thinking (and ran it past Jennie and Julie) and I know exchanges have not really been our strong suit recently, so I was thinking of an alternative.

What if we all donated to a reading related cause instead? We could pick a charity like Room to Read which supports literacy in several poor areas in the world (we can start our own campaign through them, so it'd be like a "team" donating) or find a reading related project to fund on donorschoose.org and make some teacher or librarian's day :)

Let me know what you think!

I just wanted to say that I think this is a great idea. I am a huge advocate of reading/literacy programs both here in the US and abroad. As a college English instructor, I encourage my students to donate to literacy building organizations on a regular basis.

A few other literacy organizations include: African Library Project and The Reading Tree. In fact, I think both accept used books as well as financial contributions. I know that with 1000 books and a $500 donation you can actually start a library in Africa through the African Library Project!

Obviously, I am willing to do both, but I would be totally fine to forgo the Exchange to support a worthier cause.

  • I think it's a great idea!  Or maybe we could run both? And perhaps people could choose to participate in none, one or both?

Maybe we could make it a regular thing? I think it's a way to stay involved in our reading communities, even if our community is online!

  • I love this idea, and I'm definitely in! :) I don't feel like a "regular" enough to participate in a gift exchange with the board, but I would definitely do this type of thing.

thanks for suggesting it! I love donors choose, and if we all got together on a project I bet we could make a great impact.
  • I also vote that we offer both this and the gift exchange, and personally I'd love to participate in both!
  • I think it's a great idea. I'd love to participate!
