Wren's birth story (it's a long one) :)

Now that she's a week old, I figured it was time to get this posted ;)

H and I checked into the hospital around 6 AM on Tuesday, September 30th for my scheduled induction. After the preliminary questioning, they got me hooked up to an IV for fluids and my antibiotic (tested positive for GBS). The IV finally went in around 730 AM.

I got hooked up to the external fetal & contraction monitors, and the nurse confirmed that I was already having contractions (they had started happening intermittently the Friday before). She checked my progress and said that I was 4 cm dilated and told me that they were going to get the Pitocin started.

Around 8 AM, they got the Pitocin hooked up to my IV and I started to feel the contractions get stronger shortly after that. They started to get to be about 3 minutes apart around 9 AM, and my doctor came in and broke my water & inserted the internal fetal monitor.

By 10 AM, my contractions seemed to be coming back-to-back with no time to rest in between. I was in some intense pain and came very close to asking for an epidural right then. The nurse came in and had me lie back down (I had been standing and swaying to alleviate some of the pain) so she could check my progress. I was at 7 cm then. That was probably around 1015 AM. I think that she also tried to insert the internal contraction monitor at this point, but Wren's head was too far down and she couldn't get past it.

I had several more intense contracrions and the nurse came in and gave me some oxygen and said something about getting more oxygen to the mommy sometimes helps get more to the baby. And at this point, I was getting very concerned, but I couldn't see the monitor screen from where I was. But Wren's heart rate had dropped down into the 70s and had stayed there for several minutes.

The oxygen didn't seem to be helping, so the nurse went to page the doctor. When she came back into the room around 1045 AM, she told everyone in there besides H that they needed to leave and she had me get on my hands and knees in the bed. After a few minutes, she had me drop down on my elbows and told me to sway my hips with the contractions.

The doctor came in a few minutes later and checked my progress, and said I was between 8 & 9 cm. I started feeling like I needed to push. And when she checked me again, I was fully dilated. This all happened so quickly that it's hard for me to remember the exact order of things.

But, I believe it was just shortly before 11 AM, my doctor informed me that we were going to try for a vaginal birth, but since the baby was in distress, if labor took too long or was too hard on her, then I would be having an emergency C-section. And if we had to do the C-section, then I would have to "go to sleep" for it.

They started having me push with my contractions, while the doctor was trying to get the vacuum in place (which created a ton of extra pressure and made pushing very painful). At one point, I felt like I was going to pass out because I couldn't catch my breath between pushes.

After about 5 pushes, our baby girl was born at 11:12 AM. She weighed 6lbs5oz and measured 19 1/2 inches long. Even though she was little, I ended up tearing, so I had to get stitched up. But they put Wren on my chest and I got to look at her beautiful face and then suddenly, I forgot all of the pain & discomfort from the labor process. She was (and is) the most beautiful baby I had ever seen and was totally worth every minute of the labor process!

Some of the times and details are fuzzy, because I wasn't exactly watching the clock once things started to really get moving. But the end result is the most important detail, anyways :)

Oh, and here are some pictures from Wren's Big Day
