NMMR: Running/Walking to Work

I'm considering running/walking to work to save money and gain some much needed exercise. I only work about 4 miles from home, but it's mostly country. The problem is we live in an open range county. Open range means you put up fences to keep things out not necessarily in. This means there are several dogs that run loose along where I would go. I'm terrified of getting but lol how would you deter the dogs?

Hi! How about getting a cheap bicycle? That may be an easier escape in case something happens.

If you decide to run, maybe a horn of some kind? LOL

  • Do you know for a fact that the dogs are aggressive or unfriendly?  Could you stick to roads to avoid them?
  • It's not that they are particularly aggressive, I know for sure there are a few that are territorial. I would only stick to roads so I don't get shot lol. But with no real fence or leash laws, the animals are allowed access to roads and pretty much anywhere they want.

  • I would second the bike...at least at first. 8 miles is a lot of walking/running to do everyday. make sure you get lights for visibility.

  • I would start with a bike too. Then you can kind of test it before deciding to run.
Also want to say this may sound like a small change, but not paying gas even for just 8 miles a day can help change your budget since you were so tight, so congrats on thinking outside the box and trying to move the needle even more!

  • Yep I would also bike as well.  It will save you a ton of time and will still give you the exercise you need.  Won't take long before the savings in gas equals the cost of the bike if you don't already own one.

  • I think I will try the bike idea. I really need the exercise/savings. They only sucky part besides the dogs is the temperature. (Middle of October and the high is 92) But thats what I get for living out here. lol.

  • I'd rather bike to work.  I couldn't imagine being super dripping sweat coming into work first thing in the morning.  Not that you won't be sweating biking, but it would be much better.

  • Luckily we have showers here that I could use for that.

  • Pepper spray.

I live in a tiny town, but do my half marathon training on country back roads and a canal where many dogs roam.  Most of the ones I meet are friendly, but I run with pepper spray just in case.

  • I second the bike and pepper spray.  Pepper spray would be smart even if there weren't dogs.  Best of luck!
