Monday Accountability

1. How MM was your weekend?

2. Any progress towards goals?

3. Regardless of your current salary, would you rather have a boring repetitive job that paid $90,000/year or an engaging job that you really enjoy but it pays $45,000/year?

Re: Monday Accountability

  • 1. I don't think we spent a dime!! We painted our bathroom a gray color (over the light purple) so that when we sell, there's no purple bathroom. We had the paint already. We also had a plumber come last week to fix/replace our leaky tub fixtures but we had put $ aside for that.

    2. $680 to mortgage principle. $12 to top off our e-fund (we reached out current goal for now), $152 to our house DP (we want to keep increasing this with my PT job $-next goal).

    3. That's a tough one, even though I am greedy, I'm not sure I could deal with a boring job, it would just depend on how boring it is. If I could afford my lifestyle at $45K, I would stick with a good job.

    1. How MM was your weekend? Pretty good- we took the girls to the pumpkin farm (all paid for by grandparents) and DH is going grocery shopping today (off for Columbus Day.. lucky teachers!)

    2. Any progress towards goals? We got our queen size mattress on Saturday and the rug is supposed to arrive today. Once the rug is down, we'll put up the bed frame and the room will be almost done. Looks awesome so far. DH is calling some places today for a backup sump pump battery install and we're starting to winterize the outdoors while it's still nice out.

    3. Regardless of your current salary, would you rather have a boring repetitive job that paid $90,000/year or an engaging job that you really enjoy but it pays $45,000/year? $90,000 for sure mostly because that's pretty much what I make now and DH makes about 1/2 that. We couldn't afford day care, good savings, vacation funds, 529 plans, etc if I made the same amount he did. My job is fine- an exciting, rewarding career doesn't make me a whole person- my family and their happiness/well-being does.

  • 1. How MM was your weekend?

It was OK. $12 friday for garlic to plant (3 types of garlic, 2 softneck 1 hardneck), Saturday I spent $43 at the groccery store.  Sunday H and I spend at octoberfest, we ran the road race at the beginning of the day, it was $70 for us to register, but with registration we, ran the race, got admission to octoberfest, got 3 beers each, and lunch, so it was totally worth it. we also spend another $20 at the grocery store on the way home and $45 at home depot for supplies to winterize the garden.

    2. Any progress towards goals?

not yet. we make all progress at the end of the month

    3. Regardless of your current salary, would you rather have a boring repetitive job that paid $90,000/year or an engaging job that you really enjoy but it pays $45,000/year? if the boring job only required 40 hours a week, I might consider that.  But I've done the boring repetative job in the past (for like $24k/year) I'm not sure salary would be the only thing to make me do it again.

    1. How MM was your weekend?

Our was pretty spendy, but it was budgeted.  We (hopefully) finished buying supplies for the bathroom remodel.  We went to Home Depot 4 times this weekend and bought stuff but also made returns each time.  I've sort of lost track of what our net cost is (I will know once all the returns hit my CC), but I'm pretty sure we're well under $1,000 for this project in total.  I'm super satisfied with that because it's starting to really come together. We also spent a few hundred on clothes this weekend - stocking up during the Columbus day sales, and we got some great deals.  That will probably be the last major clothes shopping until the new year.  Then we also spent around $50 on groceries for the week.

    2. Any progress towards goals?

We actually got further than planned for the bathroom.  Finished demo'ing the bathroom, grouting, patching the drywall, painting, and then we got the light fixture installed and (almost) have the sink installed.  We have the faucet and everything fit in and the sink bolted into place.  We just need to finish the drain pipe and hook up the water lines to be done with that.  We're going to try to finish the sink tonight and then that will put us on track to be 90% done before this weekend.

    3. Regardless of your current salary, would you rather have a boring repetitive job that paid $90,000/year or an engaging job that you really enjoy but it pays $45,000/year?

Assuming I had access to the internet and could entertain myself that way, I would take the money.  I agree with cbee that a job doesn't make you a whole person - people do.

    1. How MM was your weekend?
    $79 Home Depot, $89 Target, $67 Crazy8 (kids clothes), $95 groceries.

    2. Any progress towards goals?
Yes and no. We didn't add to our efund/savings but we didn't pull from it either. First vet bill was paid last week $205. We'll get a second vet bill on Friday (payday!) for this week ("hospitalization" and monitoring). Vet gave us some figures so I'm adding a little extra for cushion and budgeting for it.

We opted for laminate flooring in our house (kid and pet friendly) and doing the install ourselves (easy and cheaper)!

With having three pays this month, we're hopeful to cash flow the vet and most of the flooring. If not, the flooring is at 0% interest for 12 months.

    3. Regardless of your current salary, would you rather have a boring repetitive job that paid $90,000/year or an engaging job that you really enjoy but it pays $45,000/year?

I'm not sure. Money is great but not everything. H makes more than I do, I work in non-profit. $90 would be great but $45 would work. Although there are times I wish we could do more vacations, not stress about random bills, etc, we are comfortable and happy. Our kids are happy and not going without.

Could have been worse. Went to my BFF's for the weekend and spent $25 on eating out, and $60 on gas too and from her house.

Also got items for the next house project, which was $100.  Then $16 on a shirt for maternity pictures and $40 on groceries.

    2. Any progress towards goals?  Just keeping our checking beefed up for now.  We're remodeling our den (yay the last room to be remodeled in the house!), and were hoping we wouldn't need to tear the walls down.  Needless to say the addition was done incorrectly and now we have to tear everything out and start from scratch.  It's going to double the cost of the project, but at least it will be done right.

    3. Regardless of your current salary, would you rather have a boring repetitive job that paid $90,000/year or an engaging job that you really enjoy but it pays $45,000/year?

90k job.  I can entertain myself quite easily, and do so now in my current job that isn't very challenging to me.

  • 1. How MM was your weekend? Spent $80 at a charity auction. That's it.

    2. Any progress towards goals? None. None till November.

    3. Regardless of your current salary, would you rather have a boring repetitive job that paid $90,000/year or an engaging job that you really enjoy but it pays $45,000/year? $90,000. I think having money like that would make my life overall more fulfilling even if I was crazy bored 40 hours a week.

  • 1- got take out chinese friday night and met the inlaws for dinner saturday night.  Went to gap kids, old navy, and target to look for some finishing accessories for DD's 3 year photos next weekend.

2 - sold a couple things on craigslist and was able to put $150 in the basement fund

3 - There is no way I could take a boring job so I would go for the 45k.  The reason we are self employed is because we really enjoy what we do and corporate jobs are just not for us at all.

Wasn't too fantastic but stayed in budget for the most part.

No progress at the moment, but did some very needed car repairs.

I would do the boring job to buy income property and retire early.

Not at all!  I'm a musician and teach private violin and viola lessons out of my home studio.  I also play with a trio and we perform about 35-40 events per year.  DH is a photographer and has owned his business for 13 years.  He shoots commercial and wedding photography.

I've worked 3 corporate jobs in the past and after I learned how to do the job I would get very bored and not feel challenged.  Sure the paycheck was good and so were the benefits, but it doesn't really mean anything if you don't enjoy what you do.  DH just got financed for a commercial loan to build his own studio instead of renting.  That will help us financially, but we are doing just fine and pay for all of our own insurances and contribute to retirement on a regular basis.

That's awesome! I love music and play the flute, however never continued passed high school. I have one friend who's in a symphony on the side. A girl I went to high school with got her business degree, worked a 8 to 5 and left to do photography. She has her own studio on their home property. She loves that she sets her own schedule and also can leave work at work without the commute!

    Sounds perfect!

I play viola and learned violin in college. It is very flexible and allows me to sah with dd while making extra money. If I did not have a kid I would do it full time.

  • 1.  It was bad, but most of it was expected and planned for.  We spent around $100 on food and beer purchases associated with the half marathon-H and my BFF's BF got breakfast while we ran, and we all went out to watch the football game and have some beers afterward.  We also filled up both gas tanks ($70).  In the unbudgeted department, I spent $60 on artwork that I LOVE that I saw at a local art festival.  I feel a little guilty, but rarely do stuff like that so won't lose sleep over it.

    2.  Not this week.  I did retool our budget to start putting aside more for home expenses, which is long overdue, and started a separate account for travel since it was getting too mingled with our other savings.

    3.  In a vacuum, I guess the $90,000 job.  That said, what I have in real life is a $40,000 job I find challenging and enjoy.  Part of the issue is that it's nonprofit work, so it's meaningful to me.
  • 1. How MM was your weekend?  Not as good as it could be.  We ate out a little and I went to an orchard to get apples.  I think we spent roughly $125 over budget for the weekend.

    2. Any progress towards goals?  Ended up spending all of MW's bonus on fixing her car.  Then the brand new computer crapped out on her so she has been without a car for a few months.

    3. Regardless of your current salary, would you rather have a boring repetitive job that paid $90,000/year or an engaging job that you really enjoy but it pays $45,000/year?  Most jobs tend to have repetitiveness to them.  I would take the $90k at this point just so we could pay off debt.

  • 1. How MM was your weekend?

Not too good. The check engine light came on in my car and i needed to get it repaired in order to pass inspection and register my car. Ended up costing me 142 but the guy had said 300 so i was thrilled it was that low. Apparently the 300 was before a coupon i had. Half of what i expected to spend but still 140 overbudget. :/

    2. Any progress towards goals?

    Nope

    3. Regardless of your current salary, would you rather have a boring repetitive job that paid $90,000/year or an engaging job that you really enjoy but it pays $45,000/year?

Can i do the 90k one for a few years to pay off my debt and then to the 45k one? lol

  • 1. How MM was your weekend?
Bad, but that was expected and mainly budgeted for.  We went on a mini-vacation for my first half marathon, so...lots of spending.  We only went over by about $20 on our food budget and then we also bought a bottle of wine e for $20. Everything else was budgeted for.

    2. Any progress towards goals?
    Not this week

    3. Regardless of your current salary, would you rather have a boring repetitive job that paid $90,000/year or an engaging job that you really enjoy but it pays $45,000/year?
$45k would be a pay raise for me, so I'd definitely take the job I really enjoy.  I really enjoy my current job and it makes a big difference for me in my quality of life.  We are able to do just fine on our limited income, so I think it'd be fine.  Then again.. when we have kids it might be a different story!
