Gone Girl Movie (spoilers)

Who saw it this weekend?  Thoughts?

I thought they did a very good job condensing it all into a movie and that it was excellent.  But... weren't we promised a different ending?  Or am I thinking of something else?  I was positive that there was supposed to be a different ending so that those who read the book would have something different to look forward to being revealed.  If I had known it was going to be exactly the same ending, I could have waited for it to hit DVD.  Instead I rushed out opening weekend to make sure the *new* ending wasn't inadvertently spoiled for me.  I could have saved $40.  :(  At least we went to a matinee -- the damage to my wallet could have been even worse!

Re: Gone Girl Movie (spoilers)

  • Yes! I was nervous because I had heard they changed the ending and then it was basically the same.

I thought they did a great job though and really enjoyed it.

  • I heard that too and am trying to figure out what was different.

Wasn't there a part when Amy blackmailed Nick to not tell the truth?  I can't remember the book very well (well, the details that is) to fine tune the differences. But clearly, it wasn't the "change" of an ending they led it to be.

  • I saw it with DH on Friday and I thought they did a great job translating the book to a movie. I thought it was neat Gillian got to write the screen play as well. DH hadn't read the book and he loved it too. He also thought that DD shouldn't be allowed to see it lol. As far as the ending is concerned about it supposedly being different, because I kept waiting to see what happened, I guess it was a misunderstanding. http://www.crushable.com/2014/10/06/entertainment/gone-girl-different-ending-same-explanation-gillian-flynn-lie/

  • I really liked this.  I went with DH who had never read the book and when he left he was take aback at how crazy they all were.  We both agree NPH was good but it was still hard to not see him as Barney.
If I had to have another gripe, they didn't really make Amy the "cool" girl in the flashbacks like they kind of did in the book.
The parents were perfect and I absolutely loved the soundtrack.

  • I liked it. I feel like I would have liked it more if I didn't know what was coming. That scene where she takes out Desi was a doozy, wasn't it?

  • I just watched it tonight and thought it was one of the best book-to-movie adaptations I've ever seen. So. Good.

Reading this makes me so excited about seeing the movie this weekend! Woot!

  • Yes, I just got back from seeing it and I totally agree with all of you...I also was confused initially because I kept waiting for the "different" ending (honestly I figured one of them lost it and killed the other one). I also agree though that they did a fabulous job adapting the book and the acting was perfect.

I closed my eyes during the scene where she takes Desi out, haha. I would have nightmares for weeks if I had watched that scene :p
  • I saw it this weekend and loved it, but it was harder for me to watch than to read.  I also felt like Nick was more sympathetic in the movie than he was in the book, but it could just be that it's been a long time since I read it.

  • Question: I'm planning to go see this soonish and I want my husband to see it with me.  He hasn't read the book. I've told him the book is a complete mindf***.  For someone who hasn't read the book, is the movie as much of a mindf*** as the book?

  • I think so! It really follows the book so closely I think it is almost as effective for someone who hasn't read the book.

I saw it with my husband who had not read the book and he definitely thought it was a complete mindf*** :)

  • Agreed!  I went with one of my sons, who had not read the book, and that was definitely his assessment as well.  It was fun to see his reactions.

I may end up seeing it again, as my husband is getting interested in it.
  • I saw it with Luke, who hasn't read the books and he was totally thrown by it.  That said, he also got super antsy and thought it lasted too long.
