How to save money on internet?

My SO and I currently have Comcast for our apartment. We pay $85 per month for basic cable plus internet. We don't ever watch cable because we prefer Netflix, but we are stuck paying for it because it seems that Comcast charges more for just internet than if you bundle it with cable. I hate paying $85 just to have the cable sit there and only use the internet, but I'm in school and job hunting, so internet is a necessity. Our apartment is already wired for Comcast and Verizon, but I'm not sure if we are able to use any other options. CenturyLink isn't available in our area either. What do you use for internet only, and how much does it cost per month? TIA!

Re: How to save money on internet?

  • right now we use time warner for high speed internet and spend $62/month.  Within the next month we will be switching to google fiber very high speed internet for $70/month.  We don't have cable so higher speed internet is a must for us.

  • We have wireless internet only and pay only $35/mo. with AT&T.  I'm not sure the speed, but we can run 2 computers (one laptop, one desktop), Amazon Fire TV and a Kindle simultaneously no problem.

  • I feel your pain.  We have the most basic cable (no cable box, just the major news networks) which H wants and that is only $8 per month.  The remainder of our almost $80 bill is internet :-(

I know a lot of people who call comcast and try to decrease their package and end up just getting a discount.  My mom somehow ended up witha  bill $100 lower than it was, all new cable boxes, and the same (expanded cable/phone/internet) package.  I just don't know what to say, because I can't call and say I want to decrease my internet...
  • Comcast has almost a complete monopoly in my area, and that is why I'm having trouble. We can also get Verizon, but I've heard it's not the most reliable supplier in our area (not that Comcast is much better). I think I looked into AT&T, but I don't think it is available in our area. I will have to look into Time Warner and Google. Thanks!
  • How frustrating! I looked up AT&T and Google Fiber, and it looks like neither are available in our area. My SO called Comcast and told them that we wouldn't be able to afford our plan anymore, and they were like, "we can help you cancel if you want." I guess they just don't even care since they know we would end up crawling back to them anyway...lol
  • What about dish network or direct TV? I believe they both offer Internet now

  • yeah so far our city is the only city that has google fiber right now.  we are pretty excited to get away from time warner.  They had the monopoly in our area.

We live in So. Fla. And Comcast has taken over our area - att & vzw is available too, but the speed is sub par.

DH (who works on computers) says that Comcast has the best speed out of the three. If you use a lot of internet stuff (Netflix, etc) Comcast is the best

  • We pay $70 for Verizon Fios, but I think it will go up at some point.  I think it's the "middle" of the speeds offered, but we stream stuff nonstop.  It always bums me out when people post budgets and say they can get their internet for $50 or less, because that is just not our reality.  We could probably get slightly cheaper with our other area option, Cox, but we've had horrible customer service experiences and like the quality we're getting from Fios.
  • Just commiserating since I don't have any helpful suggestions!  We pay a similar amount for internet and home phone.  We wanted to switch to Ooma because we don't have any long distance calling as part of our current plan (among other reasons), but it would cost us more for just internet than for the internet/phone bundle.  Verizon frequently comes around trying to tell us how much of a better deal they will give us than Cox, but when we tell them what we currently pay for our rather unusual bundle, they admit that they can't do better.  Alas.
  • I'm convinced that Comcast is the worst company on the planet.  We were stuck with them when we lived in an apartment complex and they were the only option.  Something went wrong with our cable AND internet, and we were left without both for THREE MONTHS!  They kept sending techs out and none of them could fix it (and some of them just didn't even show up, despite the fact that my husband took off work to meet them at the apartment).  I was in school part time, so I had to stay at my job to get schoolwork done.  It was terrible. They didn't make us pay for the time we didn't have service, but they also didn't give us any additional discounts either.

Anyway, could you drop them and just tether internet from your phone? Also, at one time, I found a website where you typed in your address and it gave you all your options for utilities, cable, phone, internet, etc.  Maybe you could find that website?  I just looked for it and I couldn't find it, but it looked like maybe whitefence.com did the same thing?
