Irregular Periods, Trouble Conceiving?

I went to the OB-GYN yesterday with my husband for my annual checkup and to ask her some questions. Essentially it ended with her giving me preconception pills that I need to take when I decide to come off the pill and she took 9 vials of blood for all the prenatal testing.

I am little discouraged because she said that since my period was very irregular before the pill that it will most likely go back to being irregular and that getting pregnant might be difficult, but that if I get pregnant within the first month of coming off the pill, theoretically I could have twins. It has made us rethink our conception plan because of the fact that I might struggle.

I'm supposed to get my cycle this week, so I have no idea if I should renew my BC script or not.

Any advice?

Re: Irregular Periods, Trouble Conceiving?

  • I had irregular periods before going on the pill and also had non-existent to irregular periods after coming off of it.  But by taking Metformin and doing acupuncture, my cycles did regulate.  Don't freak out yet!

  • You won't know what your body will do until you're off the pill. :) I had very irregular periods before bc and I've had nonexistent cycles since I got off the pill 6 years ago. That's unusual though so don't freak out. And even if you DO have irregular periods when you get off the pill, there are things you can do and meds you can take that will help you ovulate. No need to borrow trouble right now though.

If you DO find that you're irregular, it's not the end of the world. Plenty of women with irregular cycles still get pregnant all the time. It just may take a little more work (charting temps, OPKs, etc.. still not a big deal though. Women with regular cycles do that stuff too!).

    Good luck! :)

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

What are the "preconception pills" that the doctor gave you and what are they supposed to do?

I also had irregular cycles before going on the pill (non existent cycles followed by months of heavy bleeding).

My doctor said to wait 3-4 months after stopping the pill and to let her know if my cycles had not regulated.  She would have me come in and do some testing (I assume blood work to check hormone levels) and then see what can be done.

I went ahead and stopped taking the pill a month early to see what my body would do.  I have started taking prenatal vitamins as a precaution and I started temping on the first day of my period.  I hope my charts will be helpful to my doctor if I need to go back in for an office visit.

I have heard (completely unscientific stories) that a woman is more likely to throw out multiple eggs when coming off the pill as the body is relearning how to work "normally".
I wish I had brought the prescription with me, but I can't remember the name of them.  Essentially I'm supposed to take them when I decide to come off the pill.

I called the office.  The pills are Vitafol Nano, a preconception and prenatal supplement.

That is a very, very incomplete prenatal vitamin. Nothing more.

And what testing was ordered? 9 vials is more than I had drawn for a full fertility workup from my RE (and that included all tests to clear us for tissue transplant). Hormone levels would be worthless as you are still on birth control. What exactly did she order? I'm guessing some very wasteful things that won't be accurate as it seems as though your doctor pretty much has no clue what she's doing when it comes to this based on her comments that are rooted in "research" from the early 1980's.

Well I knew it wasn't going to be a full prenatal vitamin.

I do know that when I decide to come off of the BC, I need to keep track of my periods and keep her updated in terms of the regularity.

Do I need to be taking a prenatal vitamin so soon if we aren't quite ready to TTC yet or should I just start anyway?  I wonder if I should call them back and try to speak more to her.

  • With regards to taking a prenatal...my OB and RE both told me that any woman in her child-bearing years should take a prenatal.  They both said it's the best way to get all of the vitamins your body would need if you were to "happen" to get pregnant.  It won't hurt you to take it.  I started mine almost a year before TTC and have continued taking it since having my son.

My OB told me as well to start taking a true pre-natal before you even consider TTC. She was more concerned about the folic acid content (based on my medicinal history), but she was happy with the one I'm taking (Nature Made Pre Natal w/DHA).

Bonus: My nails and hair have never been better. :)

  • Thanks for the help ladies.  I'm going to call when I'm out of work to clarify what it is she gave me and if I should just start taking prenatal vitamins.
