Has anyone else started House of Leaves? (NS)

I've heard this is really scary, but I'm about 150 pages in and... nada. Anyone else? I get what the author was doing, but the format is making it way too choppy for me to become immersed in. I was really looking forward to this, but unless something changes soon, I think I'm going to ditch this.

  • I am lost forever in Feast for Crows, and I will NEVER be done. I'm convinced that every time I read 50 pages, 50 more get tacked on to the end.  I'm enjoying it, it's just the never-ending book.

So anyway, maybe I'll be done by next Halloween and I can read the NBC horror pick for 2015.  Haha :)

  • I'm only about 25 pages in.  I got distracted by another book.  I'm having trouble with the PAGES of footnotes.

  • Just flipping through this book gives me a headache.

  • I've started it and am about 75 pages in...I am enjoying it and will probably finish it (unless it gets super scary) but so far it's not freaking me out too much.

For me I just try to view the footnotes as the "other" story. There are obviously lots of footnotes that are essentially pointless and those I just skim but the ones where he really goes off I just view that as part of the other story this book is telling.

It is amusing though, because I work in higher ed I read TONS of research type papers and articles so I keep not noticing the citation numbers until I get to the bottom of the page because I'm so used to them not actually meaning anything!

I started; I'm maybe 250 pages in? I also had a tough time with keeping track of everything, especially when some of the choppier stylistic choices and ALL THE FOOTNOTES.

I haven't finished, so I can't say if it's worthwhile, but it does get more suspenseful, easier to read, and much more interesting things start happening in TNR, so maybe try sticking it out for a few more chapters?

Outside of any actual content of the book, I like that some of the text is printed in color.

  • I got to about page 75 and ditched it. I just wasn't really getting into at all. At first I thought the unconventional format would be cool to read, but honestly, I just wasn't enjoying it.

  • I read it a while ago and I recall it getting creepier the further in you go.  Likewise, the story in the footnotes gets scarier as it goes on.  Also, the latter half of the book is much less dense than the first half.  IIRC there are pages that literally only have one word printed on them.
