Registry Recommendations

I know we've had a few posts like this before but I think there are a bunch of us who will be registering soon. I know everyone has their own opinion and what works for one, doesn't work for all but I'm looking for your must have items. And those that you wouldn't waste your time with.

I finally convinced DH that we need to actually go get hands on and play with strollers, car seats, etc soon so he's decided on Babies R Us for our date night tonight. I love that he's getting exciting but I'm a list person and feel overwhelmed by walking in semi-blind. Recommendations welcome!!

Re: Registry Recommendations

  • I will say Lucie's list has really helped me sort through the big items.  Such as car seats, strollers, baby wearing carriers etc.

  • Definitely go try out strollers! I had one in mind and when I went to see it, it didn't maneuver well, and didn't collapse as easily as I would like.

    Must Haves:
    Aden and Anais swaddle blankets
    nightgowns with the elastic bottoms
footie pajamas with zippers, not snaps
receiving blankets (we actually used these for burp cloths)
    rock n play
    pack n play
    sound machine
    bouncer seat
a couple different kind of pacifiers, since babies can be finniky
    several fitted sheets
    back seat mirror
    sophie the giraffe
If registering for bottles, I'd recommend just registering for a couple in a few different brands. Again, some babies are very particular about this.
    Changing pad covers

    Not Needed:
Nose Frida - recommended here, but we just used the bulb aspirator the hospital gave us
Windi - again, we didn't have gas issues, so this is still in the package
Tiny Mittens - our son hated them
    Bath tub thermometer
Baby shampoo/lotions - the kind we registered for caused W to break out like crazy. I would just buy a small size of one and see if it works before making a larger commitment
    Wipe Warmer/Bottle Warmer

  • Honestly, I feel like it all comes down to personal opinion.  Everything MUST meet certain safety requirements.  So from there on out, it's down to what you want and what will work.

We went with the Baby Trend line for our infant seat and strollers because DH liked the handle on the carrier.  We now use an Evenflo convertible seat because it had good reviews and we liked the price.

  • Oh, and baby carriers are going to depend on your kid, too. We got the KTan wrap carrier, and he HATED being snuggled in like that, so I got the Ergo and he was a much happier baby. We still use the Ergo regularly.

  • put a convertable car seat on your registry! you'll need it before you know it and they can be expensive.

the basics have already been covered so i'll add some fun items

     - an oball! everyone that I talk to that has one of these says their kid loves it

     - the piano play mat

    - bassinet

    - halo sleep sacks

    - nursing pillow. we like our bobby and use it more for helping him sit than acutally nursing.

    - bathtub

i'll add to this list as I think of more

  • I have heard the same thing @caseyandlizzie said about bottles. It all depends on the baby, so try out a few before buying a pack.
Also, read reviews on the car seats before you go to BRU. At least you will be able to form a small list before you walk in.

  • i second lucie's list. she has a really great list that breaks it down by if it's necessary, or if it's just nice to have, and price points. i used that as a reference because it was incredibly helpful.

the problem i have with recommending what must have's are is that it really isn't even opinion, it's baby preference. for instance, DS HATED being swaddled, so i'm glad nobody wasted money on AA blankets. we tried swaddling with all kinds of things, tried swaddleme's, tried a woombie. he hated it all. so, while that's a must have for one person it's not for another and you really don't know until you try with the baby. we thought we were golden with swaddling when we tried at a week old. wrong. i didn't realize that the first 1-2 weeks is a honeymoon period where the baby is sleeping more than anything and hasn't yet realized it isn't going back in the womb. once that period is over, everything changes again. and DS was having no part of swaddling.

but, what worked well for us:

    RNP
boppy (we are FF, but it helps when holding the baby for long periods of time and for bottle feeding, and also works as a pillow for whoever is stuck on the couch with the baby for awhile)
car seat frame swing (didn't work to calm him for general use, but was extremely helpful when bringing home a still sleeping baby or when i needed him to be sleeping in order to leave the house)

honestly, that's about it on my list. we had the basics, everything else was fluff to us and not necessary. for #2 i picked up a regular swing, a snuza, AA blankets just in case (and only because they were $8, new in box, sold second hand-otherwise i wouldn't have spent the money. DS is attached to his receiving blankets as lovies and i'm afraid that if he sees us using similar blankets with #2 that it might upset him and i'd like to reduce the triggers that could upset him when possible), and i think that's it. those were the only things that we didn't have with DS that i thought might be helpful this time. otherwise, #2 is using the same stuff we had with DS.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • Agreed that it is so much about baby preference.

    Must haves for our kid:
We used and still use our ergo.
RNP: it was great for the first few months
Glider (we put it on the registry to use the completion discount.)
A&A blankets: beyond swaddling, they are our kid's lovey.

That's honestly all I used for the first few months.

We got a pnp, which is nice for sleeping when traveling. I hated the boppy. Ben showered until he could take baths in the bathtub. We didn't switch to a convertible car seat until 2 months ago, but my kid is small. We registered for a nice stroller and I much prefer wearing him and he hates the stroller.

I feel like with babies that it is such a crapshoot but less really is more.

  • You ladies are awesome and quick :)

I know a lot depends on baby when he/she gets here and gets adjusted to life but I love hearing some of the recommendations.

While I get pulled in by pretty things and gadgets, I'm more fearful of DH with a registry gun again. For our wedding, I ended up going in and taking off some of the ridiculous things he thought were necessary. I'm hoping your lists/suggestions will help me have some back up when he is convinced we need this or that. :)
  • To add to mine and spin off of what others have said...it's definitely baby's preference.  Also...don't believe the huge ass "must have" list that you get when you register.  You don't need most of it and BRU, BBB, and Target make their money that way.  So much of the stuff will just crowd up your house.

Also, look at what your house is like.  Is it something that will actually be useful or are you just registering for it because "everyone does"?  For example...people kept telling us to register for a PnP.  That made no sense for us.  We have a 1200 square foot ranch.  The nursery is 15 steps from the living room and DS has slept in his crib from day 1.  We would have no use for that.  If we had a two story, we would have registered for one.  When it comes to travel, we borrow my ILs' PnP since they bought one for their house.

  • We use the A+A blankets for everything! I bf, so I use them as a nursing cover, they are W's lovey, as a stroller blanket, as a carseat cover, and also as a swaddler for the first few months.

It doesn't hurt to register for a convertible seat, because you can always use the completion discount later on to purchase it. We used the infant seat for about 6 months, and then W was too much of a chunker for me to comfortably carry him in it and we switched to the convertible.

  • I am registering for a convertible car seat and an infant seat. DH is going to have the convertible in his car and I am going to keep the infant in mine. That way we each have one installed and when we switch to the convertible we already have one.

That's a good idea.  We just moved Donnie to a convertible a few weeks ago.  It's so much easier!

  • My must haves:
    Halo sleep sack swaddles
Rock n play (we used it as a bassinet and it was a lifesaver)
    Ergo
    A&A blankets
A&A burpy bibs (great double use)
    Kick n play piano mat
Footy pjs (I like the snaps so you don't have to completely undress for a diaper change)

If you're looking for recommendations on seats/strollers, we had the keyfit30 and loved it. The key fit caddy was super convenient for the first several months. We now use a nextfit and a city mini gt and I love both.

  • @Sewilson33‌ are you planning on using only your car for the first few months? I have heard the convertible car seats are not nearly as easy to get in and out of at the newborn stage since it stays in the car and faces backwards at that stage.

We are getting an infant seat with 2 bases so we can go in either car easily. And that way I can get her bundled up in the winter months inside and don't have to put her in a cold seat in the car.

  • @aggiebug‌ - That is exactly what DH said last night when we were looking at them. He said he'd rather spend the money down the road on the convertible and just do one infant seat and two bases for now.
  • edited October 2014

I second one infant seat and two bases.  We got a Graco SnugRide 35 with DS and he was in it for well over a year until he hit the max height (at almost 3 he still isn't close to max weight).  We would just keep it in the car and use it like a convertable and now that we have two convertables, I'm glad we waited so we can get as much use out of them with #2 before they expire since I suspect DS1 will not be in a booster anytime soon.

I also second the A&A blankets.  DS didn't like to be swaddled, but we use those things to this day.  He now uses it as a lovey (although he is moving away from that even), but I used them as a nursing cover, car seat cover, over his ergo to block the sun, burp cloth, towel, change pad on the go, everything.  He was never swaddled in them, although I hear they are good for that too ;)

As for strollers, consider how you will be using your stroller before you go registering.  I bought a snap and go for the car until he could sit up, and then we bought an umbrella around 5 months.  We also have a million carriers (ergo, wraps, ring sling, mei tai, etc), and we have a jogger we keep at home in the garage and bring with us when we are camping/hiking.  For us, a travel system wasn't practical because I wanted the smallest, lightest option for the car, and a better quality, heavy duty option for our activities.

Other things I used often in the first year:

    - bouncy chair

    - swing

    - Packnplay

    - activity mat

    - sheets (crib, packnplay, bassinet, change covers)

    - nursing stuff

    - highchair seat that straps to a chair and converts to a booster

My advice is don't register for the little things (clothes, pacis, bottlles, bibs, socks, hats, etc) because people love throwing those things in to add to the gift and you don't know what baby will like.  Register for the big items, and things that cost $15-20 and above.  You will still want to pick up stuff after your shower, but you won't have to drop huge cash on the big items.

I am staying home for 6 months with the baby so the frequency of having to use the convertible in the first 2-3 months is very slim. It's just comforting to know DH will have his own carseat at all times and if the infant seat has to be cleaned we have the spare for times like that.
If we don't get the seat at my shower than I will be waiting until after the baby is born to buy it.

  • You've gotten a lot of responses, but I'll add mine as well.  :)

    Must haves:

    • RnP
    • K'tan (My personal preference, but all babies are different. I would register for a couple of your favorite)
    • Kick'n'Play Piano Mat
    • FP Rainforest Jumperoo
    • Boppy
    • Breast Pads (I like Avent and Lansinoh for disposable, and TLC for reusable)
    • Soft blankets (and lots of them!)
    • Burp rags and/or receiving blankets (and lots of them! Adalyn spit up constantly)
    • Manual Breast Pump (It came in handy so many times when my electric pump was jsut too cumbersome)
    • A GOOD diaper bag (Make sure you splurge and buy one you love or you'll regret it, I ended up buying a cheap one thinking it wouldn't bother me, but it did and replacing it just cost me more money than buying a good one in the first place)

    Didn't Use:

    • Shopping cart cover (too much of a hassle)
    • Portable changing pad cover (our diaper bag came with one)
    • Bottle warmer (Bottles are super easy to warm under hot water, and Adalyn liked her milk cold from a bottle anyway. Weird kid)
    • Wipes warmer (I never registered for one because I always heard they just harvested bacteria easily and we never had a need for one)
    • Shoes for a non-walking baby (under size 9 months)

  • That will be very helpful for you. I had a baby registry before too when I was on the day's of having a baby.
  • As far as I can remember, diapers, baby wash, baby powder, baby thermometer, baby backseat mirror from http://backseatmirror.net/, clothing, car seats and bibs. So far this are the things that I have remembered.
