Really dusty house!!!!

My house was built in the 70's. It has a lot of updating that needs to happen but my question is this. If you have a really dusty house what are some ways to keep it from getting so dusty. I dust all the time and everything still looks like I never do. We used to have birds but they died and that took away some of the dust in the air. Just wondering if anyone else has dust problems in older homes?

Re: Really dusty house!!!!

  • Our house was built in the mid 60s and we have forced hot air.  I def notice alot of dust, particularly in the bathroom over all the other rooms in the house.

  • I've heard that one of the nice perks to having an air purifier is that you have to dust less often. I have been wanting to get one for a while now for other reasons (my husband's sinus issues) but have been putting it off as they are so expensive! I doubt I could justify a few hundred dollars on an air purifier just to cut down on dusting (although it sure is annoying) but since it would also help a health issue I plan to buy one soon.

  • Our house doesn't have any forced air but we do use the coolers that hang out of the windows. I wonder if that could be pulling in dust from the outside? One day we hope to be able to afford to get a real cooling system.

Our house was built in 1960, and it had (and still has - but not as bad) a dust problem (we moved in this summer).  The kitchen was the worst.  I scrubbed (there was a thick coating) away the dust on the tops of the cabinets, and in all of the little nooks on the cabinet doors.  Cleaning away all of the grease and dust that coated the fans and light fixtures helped the most - I stopped seeing specks of dirt appear all over the counters.  I think the fans were so filthy, they were just throwing dust on everything every time we turned them on.

We also replaced and upgraded all of the air filters for the A/C unit, and our next step is to give all of the vents a good cleaning.  Definitely clean out your window units, and if they use air filters, replace them.  See if you the units need to be resealed in the windows.

If you have areas where dust could be hiding (like textured ceilings/walls), clean them as well as you can.  I think it is possible for old paint to flake off, or create dust.  If painting is on your "updating" list, maybe taking care of that sooner, rather than later, will help?

My husband has allergies, so we bought a small purifier a year ago (just a $40 unit - it's enough to clean the air in 1 room).  I don't think I noticed a lot of change in the amount of dusting needed, but it was comforting to clean it out, and see how much dirt we weren't breathing in!
