How long to wait to TTC after starting new job?

I am 27, and DH will be 30 on Sunday. We have been married 4.5 years, and we want to start TTC next year, but I don't want to get pregnant too soon after starting a new job.

If you were starting a new job, how long would you wait to start TTC?

Re: How long to wait to TTC after starting new job?

  • We were already years into TTC and had no plans to stop when I got a new job. I ended up getting pregnant when I had been at my job for 4 months.

I will give you this to consider though...I am not eligible for FMLA until I've been at my job for 1 year. For me, that's Dec 11th. If the baby decides to come sooner or I medically can't work any more, I'm at risk of losing my job since I'm still on probation. That's not going to be the case everywhere, but it's something to look into.

  • Like Looney said, you have to consider things like FMLA. It's a personal choice.
  • I started my job 9/24/14 and H and I plan on TTC in February or March. I'd say as long your insurance/FMLA, all of that is in good standing then its completely up to you.

  • I personally would wait until I could be covered under FMLA, but that is a choice you and your husband need to make.  Is it important to you to have your job protected so you can return? Are you planning to stay home after you have a child, so your protected job is less important?

  • I was in this situation - started a new job and wanted to TTC.

I waited until I would have been covered by FMLA if I were to get PG right away. So I waited about 5/6 months.

I live in WA and we have state PG leave (FMLA is federal) with no waiting period AND temporary disabilities (such as PG) are protected the same as permanent disabilities (ADA- Americans with disabilities act - federal). So WA has provisions that allow for keeping your job (not continuation of benefits - only FMLA requires that).

Another thing to consider is that when you are in a new job you want to establish yourself as a reliable employee.

I happen to have had a high risk (HR) pregnancy which caused me to often have 3+ dr appts per week (!).

Also, as the PP mentioned, you could be put on bed rest.

You want to weigh all the pros/cons before deciding.

Also as the PP mentioned, if you don't want/need a job to return to after you have the baby, then it doesn't really matter as much what your job protections are.

  • Those are all very good points to consider! I should start my job in early to mid January, and DH and I have already discussed starting TTC in August. I wanted to see everyone else's opinion and make sure that 7 months was a good length of time to wait. I will need to come back to work, so I definitely want to wait until FMLA would kick in before delivery. I also want to establish what an awesome employee I am before I get pregnant!

I changed my sig (in my settings) to reflect the August TTC date, but it never changed in my posts...I'm not sure why!

  • Good thinking. I'm with you on establishing yourself as an employee first. Then they will really miss you when you go on maternity leave and can't wait till you get back:)

Did you edit your sig by clicking on the little icon that looks like the outline of a person's head? I believe when you are signed in and logged into Community. That's the only way I could change mine and it stick. Hope that helps.
