NMMR: Flatware

I need advice on what to look for. The last time I bought flatware was in 2004 when I graduated from college. Back then, I bought a 18/10 JA Henckels set for about $100. The set has lasted really well, but a lot of the pieces have gone missing (DH taking them to work and tossing them by accident, lost in moves, etc.). My mom was staying in our home to watch our kids and when DH and I got back, she informed me that we're missing 4 dinner forks, 2 tablespoons, etc.

So, I want to buy something on Ebay to save money and I want a service for 12. Yes, we do sometimes need this many.

What should I look for? What brands are best quality and last longest and don't discolor (my sis got Vera Wang flatware for her wedding and they are all discolored). I also don't want to spend $$$, probably no more than $100 for service for 12.

  • We got these for our wedding:

On the outset these seem above your price range, but the people who gave them to us apparently got them on a crazy outlet sale so I feel like you could luck out on eBay.

We knew we wanted stainless for the quality and durability, but did a lot of research about discoloration and rust issues and that's what led us to this set. I'm also picky about spoon shape and this is the shape I like. We would have bought them ourselves with wedding gift money if nobody had gotten them off the registry.
  • Yes it definitely needs to be 18/10.  A lot of flatware sets are now 18/0 which rust quickly.  It makes a HUGE difference.

We received this set for our wedding and have used it for about 18 months with 0 issues.  I run it through the dishwasher all the time.  No rust or discoloration:

We find it nice and sturdy.  The pieces feel good while holding them (sounds silly but some pieces did NOT when we were picking them out).  H also likes the spoon shape, and I like the fork shape.

Unless you ebay it or find something on clearance, finding a 12-place setting 18/10 set for under $100 will be a challenge  Most sets in that price range these days are now 18/0 or else they are very thin and could bend.  I would definitely scope out ebay, Tuesday Morning, Costco, etc., but this is something you will probably use every day for years, so it might be worth increasing your budget a bit if you can't find something you like.

  • WMF (a brand out of Germany) is wonderful. It holds up well to years of use & being put in the dishwasher. Knifes are still sharp.
  • We don't have china, but we do have a set of Fiesta Ware that has lasted since 2008.  I just broke a plate yesterday and I love that I don't have to worry about it because I can just buy any color.

These are really pretty. Thanks for the rec, but they are out of our budget. I bet they look so nice on your table!!!

Thanks! I was signed in under another SN when I typed that.
  • Our everyday flatware set is made by Oneida and is 18/10.  It's been well used over the last 7+ years.  If you're not super picky about style, I'd recommend checking stores (in person and online) for clearance.  Also use coupons if you can - like 20% at Bed Bath and Beyond.

We have Oneida too.  I've actually had this set long before DH came into the picture, probably about 12 years.  The spoons are showing age, but the other pieces are good.  Thinking of buying more in the same pattern.
  • Try phatzgraph (not sure of spelling). They have outlets and outlets online too. I got a really good quality set from there in college, I didn't even know how good it was until I showed my mom. It lasted for a really long time until I got rid of it because my roommates had lost too many pieces. I was really sad to get rid of it, but replacement peices would have been more than what I paid for the set. 18/10 for like $10 a set of 4. And the sets were you 2 forks, 2 spoon sizes and butter knife. So they had everything for 4 place settings which was awesome.

  • I don't have any specific silverware advice because I just picked one that matched my dishes and called it good.   I do have advice on losing pieces.

When you get your new set do not let any leave the house!!  When we got new silverware at our wedding shower I took our mismatched silverware, through it in a bag and put it in our pantry with our lunch boxes.  When we pack lunches to go to work we can only take silverware from that bag. Sometimes the old stuff gets mixed into our silverware drawer and gets used at home, but the new stuff never gets put in the bin so it never leaves the house.  It doesn't eliminate accidently throwing it out at home, but I don't think we ever did that, I think I would forget it at work.

  • I know you said you wanted Ebay, but Oneida is having a sale right now on flatwate.  I love it.
