When did you buy maternity/nursing bras?

None of my bras fit. I have some older ones that are still too big, and my usual pre-BFP size is definitely getting to be too small but I feel like I'm between sizes. I don't want to buy a bunch now and have my boobs grow and them not fit again for a year or more. I can't decide if I should look for maternity bras that I can grow into, or just go buy a couple normal bras to hold me over for a few months. What did you mamas do?

Re: When did you buy maternity/nursing bras?

  • I lived in sports/t-shirt bras my whole pregnancy. Regular bras made me look way too bobtastic so I preferred to strap them down. I got nursing bras a week after DD was born and I was past the engorgement stage.

  • I bought 2 bras once I hit about 12 weeks from Kohls. I have been in them since then. Other than that, sports bras are great too but my boobs need a certain kind so I don't have many.

  • I bought cheap clearance bras for when I grew sizes in pregnancy. I lived in nursing tanks and sleep bras right after I had A, and bought a structured nursing bra at 3 weeks. I'm glad I waited that long because the engorgement prior to that made me a cup size bigger and I would've had to go back and buy a smaller size. Maternity pants I bought pretty much right away and I'm glad I did. They are so much more comfortable and you may as well get as much use from them as possible if you're going to by them.

  • ^I second nursing tanks. Way easier and more comfortable than bras for when you're just at home. I have three, could use 4 or 5.

  • Thanks, ladies!

@sgautschi that's a good point on the maternity pants... Right now my regular pants feel fine, but I may go there soon if I'm going to anyway eventually.

  • So far I've just boughten a couple of bras in larger sizes as I grew.  The clearance section has been my friend.

One thing I recommend is to buy a size around for a size larger than usual.  Make sure you are clasping it on the tightest one.  This way you can loosen it up as you grow more and can get some more use out of them.

  • I stuffed mine into my regular bras throughout my pregnancy. I couldn't believe how big my chest (both breast tissue and chest circumference) got and bought a couple nursing bras too small. You'll be surprised at how big you'll get when your milk comes in. Maybe buy some cheap clearance bras to tide you over for now.

  • Loss mentioned.

I bought a new VS one about 4 weeks into our first pregnancy. I also bought two larger fitted (actual cup and band sizes) sports bras. I grew 2 cup sizes in 4 weeks and actually didn't lose any of it (for the few months between our loss and this pregnancy) after our loss the next day. I grew another cup size in 4 weeks with this pregnancy so I invested in another good one but they both still work well for me. I think they're sister sizes or something like that.

I checked out some nursing bras and tanks this weekend and may invest in a few over the next couple months. For now I'm sleeping in my sports bras and getting through the work week in my two VS ones.
  • I spent $50 on a victoria secret bra becasue my boobs were huge and found out a week later I was pregnant. I bought a sleep/nursing bra before the baby arrived and once I had him and wasn't engorged anymore I went to motherhood and bought a nursing bra.

    I loved the sleep/nursing bra!

  • I tried looking at nursing bras but they all were really thin and uncomfortable and just didn't fit right. I'll have to find a good one but i'm not going to bother with that until my milk comes in and i really know what size i am.

I've only gone  up one cup size so far so i found a really comfy regular bra on clearance at kohls for like 7 bucks. I should have bought the next size up too.
