Any Advice before TTC?

Hello everyone!! I am new here. We got married in May 2011 & have not been TTC yet. We are going to start trying in April because that is when we feel we will be ready financially. Any advice on when to stop BC or any other advice for the upcoming months before we TTC?

Re: Any Advice before TTC?

  • Everyone is different, but I say to not stop BC until you are going to fully TTC.  However, I would start a prenatal vitamin about 3 months before TTC.

TTC since 1/13  DX:PCOS 5/13 (long, anovulatory cycles)
    Clomid 50mg 9/13 = BFP! EDD 6/7/14 M/C 5w6d Found 11/4/13
1/14 PCOS / Gluten Free Diet to hopefully regulate my system.
    Chemical Pregnancy 03/14
    Surprise BFP 6/14, Beta #1: 126 Beta #2: 340  Stick baby, stick! EDD 2/17/15
    Riley Elaine born 2/16/15

    TTC 2.0   6/15
    Chemical Pregnancy 9/15
    Chemical Pregnancy 6/16
    BFP 9/16  EDD 6/3/17
    Beta #1: 145 Beta #2: 376 Beta #3: 2,225 Beta #4: 4,548

  • Welcome and GL! I agree with madeline.. nothing wrong with stopping bcp before you start TTC, just make sure it's not until you'd be ok with an surprise pregnancy should you be one of the lucky ones that it happens to immediately. You can always use other methods of birth control until you're completely ready in April.

I'd also recommend taking the FertilityFriend.com tutorials. You don't have to start charting or anything right away (unless you wanted to) but it will help you understand your body and what is happening during a cycle, which is helpful no matter what!

Again, good luck! Stick around :)

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

  • It can take your body up to a year to regulate after stopping BC, so that is something to consider.

Definitely start a prenatal now with DHA to get yourself in a groove with taking it, plus it will make your nails and hair awesome!

Good luck in the upcoming months and definitely stick around!
  • I would look into carrier testing for genetic conditions. The ideal time for carrier testing is before pregnancy. You could talk to your OB about it.  If you were found to be a carrier then your husband would undergo testing to determine if he is a carrier as well. Only then would your children be at risk for that condition. Even people who are carriers usually have no family history of the condition so I think it is worth looking into to decide if it is right for you.

I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
  • I will definitely stick around. :) I have read that I should have a preconception visit...is this something I should do like right before we start to try or as soon as possible?
  • I just had my preconception visit yesterday.  While DH and I are still trying to figure out when we want to TTC, we had tons of questions for her.  She took my blood yesterday, 9 vials of it, and gave me a preconception and prenatal supplement that I need to start taking as soon as I come off the pill.

My OB told me I can stay on the pill until I was ready to conceive (she gave me that script just in case we decided to wait longer).  But she did caution me that since I had irregular periods before the pill that there is a good chance I will be irregular again, so coming off the pill sooner isn't a bad idea so that my body can try to regulate itself.

If you have questions about any medications you have and their possible effects on a pregnancy, calling your doctor to discuss them would be a very good idea. If you have any pre-existing conditions that may require special considerations while pregnant, then definitely call so you have a plan in place.

Otherwise unless you are due for your annual visit, it's a complete waste of a co-pay and both of your time.

  • Our timelines sound really similar.  We got married in May 2011 and will probably start TTC next spring.  I've already been off the pill for a couple years, so I guess looking into charting and getting to know my cycle better would be the next step for me.
