Debt collectors?

We have NO debt. We have done all of this right and still I get a phone call every other day from a debt collector. One for FIL. I am pissed. It has been two weeks. Every time I do manage to answer the phone I say I don't know anybody by that name and to please leave me alone. Not working. I am afraid to fly off the handle and be mean to someone undeserving.

H wont talk to his father about it and I am not getting myself involved. While I am concerned about whatever is going on in FIL's life there is no communication so I know there is no chance in us helping to solve the issue.

Any other ideas on how to get the calls to stop?

Re: Debt collectors?

  • Tell them you are going to report them for harassment? The fair debt collections act put in a lot of restrictions on collectors, but they don't always follow them. I'm not sure what the rules are exactly, but it may be something to look up. I still get calls every once in a while for somebody who used to have my cell phone number who owes money.

I will look them up. I shouldn't get a call today since they called yesterday but I will be prepared with something tomorrow!

Well my only advice is to be a little aggressive.  H had been getting calls for "Jose Katz" at his office since he started back in September.  He's even answered a few times to tell them that the phone number is now linked to a law firm, and they still kept calling.  Finally, they called while one of the partners was in H's office and H put them on speaker.  The partner then started in with, "Are you familiar with the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act?  Because right now you are violating it and would be liable for a penalty" blah blah blah.  He hasn't received a phone call since.

  • Change your phone number :D
  • Google, Esq. says that debt collectors can't contact a third party more than once. I bet if you start yelling about the Fair Debt Collections Act the next time they call, they'll back off.
  • This could be useful.  Make sure you that when you reference it you call it by its full name.

  • Tell them you will report them, because you actually can.  Are they calling your home phone or cell phone?  If it were me I would get rid of my land line and just use our cells, we will be doing that in December.  I'm so sick of all the sales calls on our land line.

Agreed, this is a pain in the neck. We have caller ID so we usually just answer for family/friends. If we see a weird number keeps calling, I'll just answer it and tell them to take our names off their calling lists and that's it.

    My personal cell phone.

I got a little nasty and threatening and the man claimed he didn't realize how often they had been calling me. I am hoping this stops the calls.
