Bottle Recommedations!!

Can you tell I'm starting my registry??? I was originally going to register for Avent bottles but I am seeing a ton of reviews about them leaking.

Any recommendations??

Re: Bottle Recommedations!!

  • When I nannied, both families used Avent and loved them.  The one family used Dr Browns for a short period of time when their son had bad acid reflux, but washing all of the parts to those was a pain in the ass!

We tossed both Avent and Dr Browns on our registry.  Just in case baby won't take one, then we have another option.

  • We used Dr. Browns with both kids and loved them. The con is they do have more parts, but they help with gas and don't leak. Also I BF so only had to wash the bottles we used at daycare daily (3 bottles 4 x a week), so the washing aspect wasn't that big a deal to me, especially since I made DH wash them - ha.

We tried Medela and had a horrible time with those leaking on us.

  • We use Medela with no problems at all.  :)

  • we tried born free, advent, and playtex and Bear didn't like any of those.  he ended up loving the Madela ones.

if you're going to register for bottles maybe register for one of a couple brands instead of whole packs. keep in mind that baby's can be picky about what bottles they'll drink from

  • D wasn't picky but her latch stunk so she had a hard time with Avent (both types of nipples). She took them fine, but would leak from her mouth. We switched to Dr. Browns when she was about two months and she seems to get a much better latch with them. I don't really mind the extra parts.

There are a lot of factors that go into which bottles baby will like/be best for him/her, so I echo what @amccul said about registering for a few types to see what baby (and you) likes.

  • Will you be going back to work after baby arrives?  I had a year of mat leave and found that because I EBF for so long, that when I tried DS with a bottle he wouldn't take it....

I literally bought one of every brand I think and it was only around 10 months did he decide to give it a whirl.  Before that point he would rather starve than eat from a bottle.  I echo the sentiment of registering for one of a few brands, and then seeing how it goes and what works.

  • I have 2 free Avent Natural bottles I got from a maternity store so I was going to try those and register for Chicco Natural 3 pack and maybe try Tommy Tippee too.

  • Dr browns do have a lot of parts, but we just toss them in our dishwasher basket made for bottle parts rather than hand wash. We had registered for Avent, but the NICU recommended a few brands, one of them being dr browns, so we switched. Not that you're at risk of having a preemie, but for anyone who is, our NICU advised against only one type of bottle, and it was Avent.

  • My DD was fine with baby essentials and avent. I've never heard of Dr browns but from PPs, sounds like it might be a good one too. Sorry my advice isn't good but I suppose it depends on the baby.
  • are you getting a breast pump? I think the madela pumps come with several bottles..
  • Adalyn wasn't a huge fan of bottles in general, but when she would take them she liked Avent. We tried Tommie Tippie and Similac bottles because I had been given those and she wasn't a fan. We did have to put her on a high flow nipple though because she would get frustrated with the slower ones. So register for different flow nipples too.

I would also suggest adding a few sippy cups to your registry. Adalyn likes the munckin ones, both with and without handles. We switched her at 6 months but could've done it sooner.

  • We put Dr Brown bottles on our registry. His first bottle was Medela, because that is what came with my hand pump. He also used Avent, because that is what came with my electric pump. He took them all. We also started on a bottle at 10 days old, since I went back to work at 9 weeks, it was very important to me that he'd take a bottle.

I didn't find dr browns to be any harder to clean than others. The bottle rodeo of cleaving DC bottles, pouring in pumped milk, then cleaning pump bottles was exhausting and seemingly never ending. One more part doesn't make much of a difference.

  • I don't have experience with this yet. But when we registered at BRU they suggested one of each since baby can be picky.

  • We use Avent and Tommee Tippee with no issues, and didn't try any other brands. I would definitely just get a couple of whatever you decide on to see if your LO has a preference and then go from there.

  • @MRads is so right. the bottle routine for dc is exhausting so one more part really doesn't matter. and then you have to clean your pump parts too. I swear I spend 30 minutes every night on this routine

  • Dr Browns. We had a love hate relationship. We loved how they cut down on his gas and discomfort, but omg the washing. At least 30-45 minutes nightly for a long time, but as he got older and only took 6 or 7 bottles a day, we could do every other day. I dread that for #2.

  • We EFF so we use bottles a lot! We tried Avent Classic which leaked and he hated. However, he loves the Avent Natural ones.

  • I exclusively pump due to LO's not latching on anymore (don't even ask - long story). So to get the milk to her, I pump then we use the platex bottles. Not the ones with the drop ins, but the other ones. She does best with those bottles. We've tried all of the others - the Tommy Tippy bottles leak and the nipples collapse and the avent bottles tend to leak. A lot of people swear by the Dr. Brown bottles but those have a million parts and are a PIA. Like others have said, get a few different ones and try, because you never know which one your baby will like.
  • After registering for a BUNCH of different types of bottle, we've mostly settled on Fiona liking the Dr Brown's and Lansinoh Momma bottles. I wanted her to like the Munchkin LATCH bottles, since we bf, but I think they frustrated her more than anything, and the nipple collapsed damn near every time we tried them (she'll take one, but it's a fight). She took a Medela bottle once too.

Never got around to trying the Avent bottles I got.

With regard to getting a baby who's breasfed to take a bottle, the LC I saw recommended introducing them around 4 weeks. They should be pretty settled with BFing by then, but not so dead set on it that they'll refuse another source.
