Alan and I met working in boats. He was a captain and I was a first mate looking for a new company that would potentially maybe hire me and allow me to move up if I ever got my captain's license. (The boating industry is very sexist) There was a guy that wanted to show me his boat and have me work for him. He was a total creep, but Alan worked for him and when I went to check out the boat and we talked all night.
He gave me a ride home, exchanged numbers and we started dating two weeks later and two weeks after that we were living together. Before I met Alan I was heading down a very bad path and I believe meeting him saved my life. We balance each other out really well. Plus, he can get me on free whale watches ;-)
We got married on August 7, 2010 on the beach in Hingham it was a perfect day!
ETA: some wedding pics. We have like no pictures of just us. :-/

"People talk about escapism as if it's a bad thing... Once you've escaped, once you come back, the world is not the same as when you left it. You come back to it with skills, weapons, knowledge you didn't have before. Then you are better equipped to deal with your current reality."

Some parts of it were really cool, like being in the Caribbean and transporting boats along the coast, meeting super interesting people and all of the partying and debouchery that goes along with it. It just wouldn't have worked for me long term. I still love the ocean and using our boats. I get to sneak on any boat in the harbor because of the connections I've made, which is cool. I loved rebuilding and repairing engines and the upkeep, the oil changes and fuel filter changes. When Alan is working he lets me come onboard and help if it works out. I do miss it, but I keep up with the people I met and am still somewhat a part of the lifestyle. I would never be able to leave it forever.
Plus, our retirement plan is to buy a huge sailboat and sail all around the world!
